What is ADT Inc.?
ADT Inc. (formerly known as “The ADT Corporation”) is an American commercial/residential security service headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. ADT became an independent public company in 2012 and has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2013.
ADT has received thousands of complaints via the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in the past three years, consisting of product/service problems, billing problems, and advertising/sales problems in that order.

Can’t Cancel Your Contract?
There is a pattern of consumers reporting difficulty in terminating their contracts with ADT either within or beyond the contracts’ minimum lengths. Complaints also consist of trouble reaching out to customer service, as ADT doesn’t accept consumer complaints via email; no-show technicians for scheduled service calls; and problems with third parties and dealers of ADT. For example, in 2018, ADT violated the Kansas Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) in Sedgwick County, Kansas, by working with an unlicensed contractor, EVO Alarm LLC, in that jurisdiction.
Unfortunately, these complaints are just the beginning for ADT. Between customer service issues, contract issues, and defective products, customers are left wondering what options they have regarding their consumer rights.
We Fix Complaints When Customer Service Won’t
Has ADT used misleading sales tactics? Have you received poor service? Do you have complaints with billing? Do you want customer service at ADT to listen?
If your complaints haven’t been heard, we can help. At Agruss Law Firm, LLC we help customers who have been mistreated by big companies and we turn your complaints into resolutions. We’ll not only file your legal demands with ADT, we’ll negotiate with the company. If your claim isn’t resolved through these negotiations, we’ll work through the legal process that is outlined in your ADT contract, which is typically arbitration.
Agruss Law Firm, LLC gets results -- including zero balances, refunds, and other compensation.
Here’s How to Make Big Companies Listen
It can be frustrating when you rely on a service and don’t get the results you’ve paid for. Big companies make mistakes every day and not only is it their fault, but it can cost you money and time and leave you with big headaches.
Have you tried calling ADT to address an issue, only to be told that the representative has no authority to do so? Or maybe you’ve tried talking to someone higher up in the company, only to be ignored, dismissed, or they take too long, continuing to waste your precious time. Maybe you’ve sent an email to the company which only resulted in a prefabricated response or they never follow through with what they’ve promised.
When you’re limited in your choices for service providers or you’re locked into a contract, what can you do?
Fortunately, you do have options.
Use Arbitration to Settle Your Complaint
Most companies like ADT have an arbitration clause in their contracts to prevent being taken to court for traditional litigation. This is actually an advantage for the consumer. When you request an arbitration hearing, an independent third party (the arbitrator) with knowledge of the particular type of situation will listen to the facts from both sides and make an impartial, binding decision. ADT will have to do a lot of work and there is no guarantee that they will have a successful outcome.
Arbitration is Fast, Inexpensive, and Private
Arbitration with ADT is conducted through the American Arbitration Association (AAA). According to the AAA Consumer Due Process Protocol, arbitration through AAA will comply with their Statement of Principles, which includes:
- The process is fundamentally fair - All parties are entitled to qualified, competent, impartial arbitrators who will conduct a fair hearing.
- You get access to all relevant information - This includes reasonable costs, confidentiality, reasonable time limits, and meeting times and/or locations that are agreeable to both parties.
- Transparency - AAA provides clear arbitration agreements and the ability for each side to hire their own representation.
- Just process - Arbitration allows the arbitrator to award the same relief as traditional litigation in a binding decision.
- Alternative to arbitration - Mediation and the ability to take the case to small claims court should be available in some cases.
Arbitration Gives you Control and Leverage
When ADT is alerted that you plan to pursue arbitration, they know it will cost them money out of pocket. Not only do they run the risk of losing the case, but they will also pay for their mistake(s) and the arbitration itself. This gives you more leverage with your demands.
If ADT doesn’t meet those demands and you have a real complaint, Agruss Law Firm, LLC can help by representing you in arbitration where you will get a fair, just, and transparent hearing.
Control and Leverage Trigger Faster Settlements
Large companies like ADT don’t like the uncertainty and loss of control that comes with arbitration. Not only do they lose the advantage in the situation, but you’re on equal footing with them in the eyes of arbitration.
The first step in taking on ADT is to formally raise your complaint. Our lawyers at Agruss Law Firm, LLC can help you to do so. We will send a letter of demands to the corporate offices of ADT, letting them know that you’re ready to begin arbitration if a satisfactory resolution is not achieved. Typically, this is 30 days, but it will depend on your specific contract with ADT.
Approximately 50% of cases will settle before proceeding to an arbitration hearing during this time. However, if ADT doesn’t offer a reasonable settlement within the appropriate time frame, the next step would be filing a case with AAA. Agruss Law Firm, LLC will not only put together the necessary paperwork for arbitration, but we will also help you take the next steps in the arbitration process.
UDAAP and Arbitration
UDAAP is an acronym representing laws that prohibit Unfair, Deceptive, or Abusive Acts or Practices in the context of trade or business. This includes misrepresentation, deception, false advertising, or false promises. These laws emerged following the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that was enacted in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The ultimate goal with these laws is geared towards protecting consumers involved in financial transactions, educating consumers on their rights, and allowing them access to information and resources to best inform their decisions.
UDAAP laws are regulated by two organizations: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC expanded the initial UDAAP laws in 2004 to include unfair and deceptive acts and practices. Some standards for unfairness, in particular, include if it causes or is likely to cause substantial injury to consumers, the injury is not reasonably avoidable by consumers, and the injury is not outweighed by countervailing benefits to consumers or to competition.
Every state has UDAAP laws, which can vary widely. However, the lawyers at Agruss Law Firm, LLC understand these laws and can use them to get compensation for deceptive practices, representing consumers throughout the country in cases of arbitration at no cost to them. The company will not only pay the consumer, but they will also pay my fees as well. The consumer will never pay me a cent.
If you’re dealing with an issue with ADT, you might try filing a complaint with the BBB or the customer service team with ADT. Unfortunately, these avenues won’t always lead to a successful resolution for you, the customer. Instead, you may want to consider an experienced arbitration lawyer to take on your case.
Arbitration is a very useful tool for resolving disputes, and Agruss Law Firm, LLC can help. With our expert guidance, we bring the big companies to the table and provide the support needed to get your bills corrected, credit reports fixed, improper fees refunded, and more. Let us pick up the sword for you; you have nothing to lose.
How Do I File a Complaint Against ADT?
We will use your state’s UDAAP law to file a complaint in Arbitration on your behalf at no cost to you. UDAAP laws include misrepresentation, deception, false advertising, or false promises. Under your state’s UDAAP law, you are likely entitled to money damages for your actual damages. Plus, the other side will pay our fees and costs. You will not pay us a penny.

My mother had ADT service for 15 years. As she is 89 years old and in poor health, it came time for us to move her to our location. We moved her leaving her house empty. I wanted to keep the alarm system so as to protect her house (til we could sell it). We had an "inside" camera but no longer would need it, so I contacted ADT to see if we could just move the camera to the an outside view. They , of course, said no problem. I set up an appointment for the service person to come for the change. I decided to add an additional camera as well. Unbeknownst to me, this action resulted in a complete new contract starting again on the date of the camera installations. I only "oked" the installation "digitally" and again, was not told that a new contract would be issued. I even told ADT upon our request that we would be selling the house shortly. We just recently sold the house (Aug of 21)and I went about cancelling all the utilities in Mother's name. No problem til I get to ADT. They said, over the phone, that it would take a month to cancel the service (thus charging an additional month's service) and that there would be approximately a $750 cancellation charge for "breaking" the contract. I informed the person that I did not "renew" a contract, only added cameras to our 15 year service. After being handed over to at least 4 different "supervisors" I was eventually disconnected completely. I just received a bill from them (ADT) yesterday for the total of $1288.38. ($60.82 for Sept21 services even though I called to cancel in Aug and $1277.56 for contract cancellation (Jan 1 2024). Again, we have had their service for over 15 years prior so there was absolutely no need in a contract renewal. My Mother is very easy to upset and this nonsense has her emotionally distraught. She has always maintained an excellent credit rating and, even though she's 89 years old and doesn't buy anything on credit anymore, she still doesn't want a needless stain on her ratings. I assured her I would find a way to resolve this without being extorted by Adt and I hope you all are the answer. Thank you for your assistance. BH

Hi Tonya. Was ADT in the bankruptcy agreement? What type of bankruptcy was issued for the company? Were you part owner of the business? I am going to give you a call to get some more details from you so we can determine if ADT has a legal leg to stand on. You can also reach me sooner at 312-224-4695. Thanks, Mike

I had been attempting to contact the ADT rep. for months regarding my account and services since we were receiving bypass notices to our home... we have not received a callback in months from the rep. or any paperwork. We decided to go with another company so I have called the 1-800 number to file a complaint and advise that we don’t feel protected and the rep./ subsidiary location has not returned our calls... they informed us that we have a 2 more years left on a contract that we did nit agree to... I was given a flyer for ADT $59.99 monthly NOT 3 years. The Rep that showed up at our house when we first closed (11 months) said that we only needed to sign for the equipment and for authorization to charge my debit card. I explained that they rep. has not returned our calls; has not provided any documentation. We have not received any service for the bypass issue. The ADT Rep took advantage of our kindness and the fact that we were new home owners.

Hi Carmel. Can you send the contract you received from ADT over to my office? I would like to look it over. Typically ADT Services has an arbitration agreement that you agreed to by signing up with them, which we can discuss over the phone in more depth. I will give you a call and we can work on this together. Thanks, Mike

I crawled through My dog door while my alarm Was on “away” And it did not alert us.
Michael Agruss9 months ago
Hi Ansley. Is there a setting for pets on your security system? Occasionally, security systems do not alert to pets, only to people, depending on the type of system that is installed. Do you have your contract regarding the system you've purchased? If you'd like to discuss this further, give me a call at 312-224-4695. Thanks, Mike

Michael Agrussabout 1 year ago
Hi Lynne. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with ADT Security Services. Under the FDCPA, the entity that owns the debt is required to provide you with proof that they have the right to pursue a lawsuit against you. Have they sent you this proof to your new address? I can reach out to you to discuss your case, and in the meantime you are welcome to contact my office at 312-224-4695 at a time that best works for you. We can work on figuring this out. Thanks, Mike.

Complaint Description: ADT is forcing me to sign a new contract to move or $450 to cancel current contract ADT is not allowing me to move my services without signing a new 36 month contract. This is not what I was told when I signed the initial contract in 2018. I was told that I could move the system with me since it is wireless. Then the guy told me they would need to send new equipment at an additional charge and up my price. This is completely UNACCEPTABLE. This is also NOT what I was advised yesterday. ADT knew I was a renter in 2018 when I moved in. ADT also knows that I am on disability. Trying to make me sign another contract is ridiculous an unethical when I'm in a contract currently and if I cancel I have to pay $450. The representative said the initial person that set up the system may have given "false " or "misleading information ". Please know and understand that stress induces my medical condition because I have autoimmune illnesses. I'm already in a flare which was just induced. This is undue harm and hardship. This is strong arming me into another contract. My new lease is 13 months, this means IF I sign another 36 month contract and I move again, ADT will make me sign another or charge $450 contract break fee. They also want to up my price and charge for additional equipment. I'm stuck!!! Your Desired Resolution: I want to know why this was not mentioned in the contract that I have listed. Why it was not mentioned in my recent calls regarding moving. Why ADT insists on forcing me and customers to sign a new contract as well as purchase new equipment rates increase. I want my contract cancelled at NO penalty at all!! Upon conversations with Carla on 6/31/2020, she stated in fact my rate could not be decreased but she would keep it where it was. She NEVER mentioned any new contract, charges or rate increases. I was told by ADT representatives that it is intentionally NOT in the contracts, it is on the website. I was “mis-informed” as to my relocation information when I signed the original contract. My questions to ADT were as follows: 1. Why is this information not in the contract 2. Why was I not informed on 3 calls prior 3. Why was I told at the I goal signing, when I disclosed I was a renter, that I could easily take the equipment because it is wireless at no charge 4. Why is ADT unlawfully forcing a cancellation situation because I have no choice but to move or forcing me to resign a new contract, pay a higher bill and pay equipment and shipping charges, especially knowing that I am only going to be renting again 5. Why is ALL of this not disclosed to potential ADT customers prior to the sale of ADT security products No one can answer these questions and the responses I received were all generic and strong arming me! ADT is unlawfully inducing or persuading the will of another person to enter into a contract, which becomes voidable at the option of the party whose consent was so induced. ADT failed to provide the relocation information in the contract. Reasons that can make a contract voidable include the following: Failure by one or both parties to disclose a material fact. A mistake, misrepresentation or fraud.

Hi Emmely. I can see why you are so frustrated and I'm sorry that dealing with ADT is causing you such stress. I would be happy to review your contract with ADT and discuss this matter further to see what options you may have. Feel free to send over your contract to my office at [email protected] I will give you a call or you can contact me at 312-224-4695 and we can discuss this at a time that best works for you. Thanks, Mike.
