The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) estimates that nearly 60,000 bicyclists per year are injured in accidents involving motor vehicles, and about 900 per year lose their lives. It’s also estimated that nearly 75% of accidents involving bicyclists and motor vehicles occur near intersections and driveways. If you’ve been injured due to a driver’s negligence, speak with one of our personal injury lawyers who are experienced bicycle accident attorneys.

Common types of bicycle accidents include:

–    Crossing-path accidents
–    Open-door (motor vehicle) accidents
–    Rear-end accidents
–    Parallel-path accidents

Another common cause is when a motorist fails to yield to a bicyclist or merges into his/her path unaware of their presence.
If you’ve been involved in a bicycle accident and emergency medical treatment is not necessary.

Take these three steps at the scene:

–    Obtain the driver’s insurance/contact information;
–    Obtain any witnesses’ information;
–    Take necessary photographs or videos of the accident scene and damage.

Important information to obtain from the driver includes a physical insurance card, photo I.D., and evidence of whether or not the vehicle is rented. If the driver does not provide this information, contact the police immediately. Also, it’s important that you accept any medical attention or treatment deemed urgent and necessary by emergency personnel, even if you do not believe you were seriously injured. Prompt medical attention will identify any potential injuries you may have and show that you took your accident seriously and are eligible for compensation for your losses.
