We often take for granted the bridges we use every day. It is easy to overlook the amount of work that goes into the construction, maintenance, repairs, and inspection of the bridges that we travel over on a day-to-day basis. However, Illinois residents should be concerned about the bridges that are used, as a recent study done by Transportation for America found that one in 12 of the bridges in Illinois is structurally deficient, putting motorists at serious risk.
Construction workers are even more at risk for serious injuries as the bridges they are called on to repair may not be structurally stable enough to work on or strong enough to handle the heavy construction equipment required for repairs.

Bridge Safety Report
According to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), there are 616,087 bridges in the United States with 235,020 of those bridges requiring some sort of repair. 47,052 U.S. bridges are structurally deficient and at least 60 years old. Also, according to the ARTBA report, Illinois is one of the top five states with the most compromised bridges.
To fix all of the structurally deficient bridges in the U.S., the ARTBA estimates it would take over 80 years. To make the necessary repairs to Illinois’ bridges, it is estimated that it and other states would need at least $76 billion. Without this important funding, Illinois’ bridges will continue to deteriorate, putting motorists and construction workers in danger.
Bridge Collapse Injuries
Over eight (8) million commuters cross Illinois’ bridges every day. In the event of a bridge collapse accident, multiple entities could be found liable for the subsequent injuries and damages, including the Illinois Department of Transportation, inspectors, municipalities, contractors, and others.
Injuries in bridge collapses are quite serious and often deadly. The most common injuries sustained in a bridge collapse include:
- Spinal cord injuries
- Severe head injuries
- Neurological issues
- Permanent disabilities
