In Illinois, the insurance normally follows the car instead of the driver. This means those permissible to drive will be covered by the owner’s auto insurance. However, the non-owner’s coverage relies on their authorized use of the car.
Most insurance carriers will cover drivers aside from the owner as long as they are listed under the policy or were given permission to use the vehicle. But, when a family member or a friend uses the vehicle without consent, they may be held liable for damages incurred. This is provided that they have insurance and the owner proves that permission was not given.
If the car was stolen and was involved in a crash, the owner will not be held accountable for the damages to the other car involved. However, you will have to file for claims for repairs to your vehicle.
