Nationally, motor vehicle fatalities are on a slight decline; but they still occur far too frequently. In Chicago, several fatal accidents have been in the news lately. In one crash, which happened early in the morning on January 27, the vehicle was actually split in half.
The driver, a 20-year-old Chicago man, crashed his 1996 Mitsubishi Galant head-on into a light pole on the Far South Side, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified his body as Keith L. Smith, of the 12000 block of South Perry Avenue. Smith was driving south on Michigan Avenue at a high speed, around 12:25 a.m; he lost control of the car as he tried to pass another vehicle, then hit a curb and struck a light pole head-on in the 11000 block of South Michigan Avenue, in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood.
Smith suffered massive head injuries and had to be forcibly extricated from the car. He was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead. Miraculously, Smith’s passenger, another 20-year-old man, survived the crash. He was also taken to Christ Hospital, complaining of leg pains—he was treated and released, according to Chicago’s police spokesman. Nothing in the police report indicated whether either man wore a seat belt, or if alcohol or drugs had been involved.
In a separate accident across town, two women were killed late Saturday night, the 26th. The car crash happened in west suburban Lyons, at 5000 S. Harlem Ave. (near Interstate 55). Both driver and passenger were pronounced dead on the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the victims as Michelle Miranda, 37, and Sandra Frankum, 36.
