A concrete saw is a power tool used to cut concrete, masonry, brick, asphalt, tile, and other solid materials and comes in a variety of sizes, from hand-held to walk-behind models, and they may be powered by gasoline, an electric motor, or hydraulic/pneumatic pressure. By their nature, concrete saws can be extremely dangerous, especially when they are used improperly or have defective parts.

Common Defects in Concrete Saws

Concrete saws typically come with a number of safety features including a saw-stop device, kickback dog, and safety guard. While they may be present on a saw, they can also fail, causing serious and deadly injuries.

The most common defects in concrete saws include:

  • Defective blade – If the saw blade is defective it can shatter and send debris into the worker and anyone in the vicinity of the saw.
  • Defective safety guard – If a safety guard fails, the worker’s hand could slip and come into contact with the blade, resulting in lacerations and amputation.
  • Kickback dog failure – A kickback dog is intended to prevent the material being worked with from being propelled back at the worker using the concrete saw. When the kickback dog fails, the material becomes a projectile that can cause serious head, brain, face, and neck injuries.
  • Altered concrete saw – If a concrete saw is altered after its purchase to increase productivity, the alterations can prevent the saw from working properly.

Common Concrete Saw Accident Injuries

Severe lacerations and amputations are the most common type of injury in a concrete saw the accident. Other types of concrete saw injuries include:

  • Facial injuries
  • Eye injuries
  • Crushed digits and/or limbs
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)

Multiple parties could be found liable for concrete saw accidents, including the product manufacturer, anyone in the chain of distribution, and the employer who did not provide proper training or have altered the equipment.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
