Elderly Abuse Study Shows Troubling Signs

Recent studies have been released which offer a troubling look at the state of elder care in America. At least two million elderly Americans have been victims of abuse, and this number is actually low—elder abuse is one of the most under reported crimes in the country, with only one in 14 cases reported.

Elder abuse includes a variety of awful crimes against vulnerable people: stealing money, neglect, violent beatings, insurance fraud, and more. A Washington, D.C. Superior Court Judge, John Campbell (who presides over the probate division, which handles cases with disabled and incapacitated adults), had this to say, “People are living longer and with older age comes frailty and disease and dementia. It’s extremely, extremely upsetting to see it [elder abuse]. These are the people who raised us and took care of us. And now they are being abandoned and exploited.”

The elderly are prime targets for abuse, both in their homes and at nursing home and adult care homes, as often they don’t understand what’s happening, and are often unable to reach out for outside help. More than 30% of nursing homes in the country experience some form of resident abuse.
