Common Causes of Falling Debris Accidents

There are several ways that a falling debris accident can occur on a construction site. These include:

  • Failure to secure equipment – Tools and other construction items are often stored at great heights on the construction site. All equipment must be properly secured to prevent it from falling and injuring people on the ground. This includes scaffolding, which is present on most construction sites.
  • Unsecured loads – Cranes are present on many construction sites and are used to move heavy materials. When their loads are unsecured or are secured improperly, the materials are at risk for falling and causing serious, even deadly, injuries.
  • Cave-ins – Trenches are one of the most dangerous aspects of a construction site and should be properly secured, as well as given proper warning signs to keep workers and pedestrians safe. When trenches are not secured, they pose a risk of a deadly cave-in.
  • Unsecured walls – Similar to trenches, walls should also be secured to prevent them from falling onto workers and pedestrians.

Depending on where the worker or pedestrian is struck, falling debris can cause serious head, neck, shoulder, and/or back injuries. If the falling debris is heavy enough, an accident can lead to multiple fractures, paralysis, amputation, or even death.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
