I have been paying only the “top end” of my student load at the moment. It has been described it to me as the interest of my debt and so my original loan amount was never reduced. Now that the law has allowed me to restructure my debt, the government sold it as a private loan. I feel completely screwed. I am a single mother of two small children and I work as a social worker. My student loans are way beyond more than my housing loans. Not only do I carry the burden of my student debts but now I have to carry the burden of this company’s selfish, money-hungry practices. As as representative of health and human services, I find Sallie Mae’s business practices appalling. They take advantage of people who just want to have better futures through education.
