Intoxicated Woman Hits Squad Car

A Great Lakes woman was charged on Friday with driving under the influence and child endangerment after she drove the wrong way on the highway and struck a pole and a Lake Bluff police car before fleeing the scene.

Lake Forest and Lake Bluff police officers were patrolling the border of the towns at 2:00 am following reports of a possible impaired driver when the accident occurred.

Sarah Soto, 32, struck a poe and drove south on Waukegan Road before rear-ending a squad car at Carriage Park Lane, according to Lake Bluff Sgt. Matt Smizinski. The squad car was struck from behind by Soto’s Ford SUV on Illinois Route 137. Soto continued driving south on Waukegan Road before she was stopped by a Lake Forest officer who witnessed the accident.

A sobriety test showed Soto had a blood alcohol content of .248. She was also charged with child endangerment when police learned her two children, aged 1 and 10, were left alone in a hotel room in North Chicago while she went out herself, according to Smizinski. The accident injured a Lake Bluff police officer with 12 years on the force. He was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.
