As we all know, car insurance is required of drivers in most states. It protects you if you are involved in an accident with a driver of a very expensive car; conversely, it also protects you following an accident caused by someone else’s negligence. But what if that driver’s insurance limits are insufficient to cover the damages? Illinois offers protection for insurance-buyers who may find themselves in such a situation.
In Illinois, $25,000 in minimal coverage is required in case of death or bodily injury to any single person in an accident; $50,000 in case of death or bodily injury to two or more individuals in the same accident; and no less than $20,000 for property damage (625 ILCS 5/7-203). Considering today’s rising health care costs, it’s unfortunate that some individuals exceed that $25,000 minimum in medical bills for serious injuries he/she sustained in an accident, and additional protection is available here, as well. In Illinois, auto insurance companies also offer uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage in order to protect those who are involved in an accident with a driver whose insurance is insufficient or lacking entirely.
For ideal protection, it may be beneficial to purchase coverage beyond the state’s minimum. Some adjustments may only differ in a few dollars per month, but could very well be the difference between mounting medical bills and a much smoother process with far less financial strain.
