Nine-Hundred Trucks Placed Out-of-Service in Surprise CVSA Inspection

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducts an annual unannounced brake check on thousands of commercial motor vehicles. This year, on May 6th, the group inspected a total of 6,337 trucks and over 50,000 individual wheels in the U.S. and Canada, and 14.2% of these trucks (about 900) were placed out-of-service specifically for brakes. This was a one-percent decrease from the 2014 out-of-service rate of 15.2%.

The CVSA is an international non-profit organization based in Greenbelt, Maryland, and comprised of safety officials and representatives at all levels throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Here are some more facts from this year’s unannounced inspection day:

  • Of 6,337 trucks, 9% (about 570) had brake-adjustment violations, a slight decrease from 9.5% in 2014

  • About 7.7% of trucks had brake component violations, down from last year’s 8.5%

  • According to the report, “brakes with manual adjusters were 2.5 times more likely to be out of alignment than those with ‘self-adjusting’ brake adjusters”

The CVSA’s annual Brake Safety Week inspection, also sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), will take place on September 6th – 12th, 2015. The work will involve tens of thousands of vehicles inspected by both state and federal inspectors with a particular emphasis on air brake components. According to the CVSA, they will check for antilock braking system (ABS) malfunctions, measure pushrod strokes as necessary, and identify “loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system components.” Last year’s Brake Safety Week included inspections of 13,305 vehicles, of which 2,162 (about 16%) were placed out-of-service for brake violations.
