Another disturbing case of elder abuse happened at a nursing home in New Jersey, last summer. A 60-year old female resident, permanently confined to a wheelchair after several strokes, and also suffering from epilepsy, dementia, and osteoporosis, was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a security guard at the facility.

The thirty year old guard gave the disabled resident money and cigarettes in exchange for oral sex, in an unfortunately common power abuse relationship that happens at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. The resident, who is entirely dependent on caregivers for her basic needs, actually told staff members about the assault, asking them for help. But nothing was done for months, the guard was allowed to keep victimizing the resident.

Eventually, he admitted to the assault and filed a guilty plea last November. The nursing home security guard accepted a second-degree sexual assault conviction, meaning he’ll serve at least three years in prison. But the facility shares some blame in this case; nursing home management owes its residents an obligation of safety and respect, and must be held accountable when their employees violate this agreement.

More than 30% of nursing homes in the country experience some form of resident abuse.
