Illinois’ required auto insurance Liability Coverage insures the other party in the event of accidents. Physical Damage Coverage, however, is recommended for your own financial safety in the face of fender benders or more serious traffic accidents.

Physical damage covers repairs to your vehicle. This type of insurance is divided into two: collision coverage and comprehensive coverage. Collision coverage will pay for your vehicle damages due to collision with another car or a fixed object (post or tree), or when your car overturns due to the impact. Typically, this insurance type will require an out-of-pocket amount (deductible) amounting to $0 to $1,000 before the coverage takes effect.

Comprehensive coverage, on the other hand, will cover damages caused by other things aside from the collision e.g. falling tree, vandalism, fire, theft, etc. Some insurance carriers will require you to secure comprehensive coverage before getting a collision coverage.

While Physical Damage Coverage is optional, having this type of insurance will save you from financial distress should you be involved in auto accidents. The type of car you own and your capacity to get it repaired yourself or purchase a new one may help you decide whether to get this type of coverage.
