Protecting your Child after an Accident

Modern cars have an impressive range of safety features, and we also have our share of car seats and special seat belts for babies, infants, and young children. However, car accidents can be devastating and none of these precautions offer maximum protection. If you’ve been involved in an auto accident with your infant child, his/her safety is your top priority and there are certain steps you should take as quickly as possible.

  • Call 911 – After checking for any injuries, call 911 as soon as you are safely able to do so.
  • Get off the road – Either before or after calling 911, move your car to the side of the road, if possible, and turn on your hazard lights to ensure that other drivers are aware of the situation as they pass through.
  • Wait for medical assistance – Do not attempt to move your child until medical professionals are on the scene. It may certainly feel instinctive to try to pick up your child or remove him/her from the car seat, but this poses a potentially-fatal risk of worsening a brain or spinal cord injury which may or may not be immediately apparent.
  • Accept medical assistance for you and your child – Allow the medical staff to do their job and ensure that potential injuries are addressed as quickly as possible while following important safety precautions.
  • Contact your pediatrician – Even if your child is treated by emergency room doctors, schedule a visit with your pediatrician to ensure his/her well-being throughout the recovery process.
  • Contact an experienced injury attorney – If your accident was caused by another driver’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for injuries, medical expenses, pain and suffering, and more.
