Swimming Pool Safety Guidelines

Summertime brings people outdoors, and especially to the backyard pool. Swimming pools are certainly fun, and an escape from the heat; however, they carry some responsibility and liability for their owners. Children and even adults near and inside pools can be injured instantly by slip and fall accidents, electrocution in bad weather, diving injuries, and drowning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 3,600 people die every year in drowning accidents, often in homeowners’ swimming pools. Drowning is a leading cause of death for young children in the U.S.

Following some basic safety guidelines can prevent pool-related accidents. First and foremost, children should be supervised in and around the pool. Regularly inspecting the pool and its environment, and maintaining this area is another way to stay safe; slides, ladders, pool toys and equipment, diving boards, patio furniture—all of these should be accounted for. Finally, keep your pool safe with emergency equipment: a first aid kid, life preserver, poles with life hooks, etc. A fence around the pool is another safety feature, so children can’t get to it unsupervised.
