Three Pedestrians Struck and Injured in Two Separate Incidents

Two separate weekend car accidents resulted in the hospitalization of three pedestrians over the weekend, according to police. In one incident on Saturday September 14th at around 2pm, 37 year old man, Gary H. Mayweathers, was struck by a 2006 Mazda 6 as he was walking along the eastbound lanes of St Clair Avenue, which is just 850 feet west of Interstate 255 in East St. Louis. Mr. Mayweathers was not in a designated crosswalk area when he was struck, at a point in the road where the speed limit is set at 55 mph.

Mayweathers was transported to the St. Louis University Hospital, where he was listed as in critical condition. The driver of the car, Alexander T. Ryan, 33, of St. Louis, was not injured. Police have not issued any traffic citations in relation to the incident. In a separate incident on the same day in O’Fallon, a man and a woman, whose names have not been released, were struck by a Chrysler 300 sedan on U.S. Route 50 near the O’Fallon Community Park.

Route 50 was closed for two hours while the initial investigations were conducted, but so far no traffic citations have been issued in relation to the accident. “It doesn’t appear to be anything criminal at this point, but we are still investigating and don’t want to jump to any conclusions,” Gimpel said.
