Two people are dead after a fiery crash early Thursday morning that involved a dump truck and a semitruck near Momence, an hour outside of Chicago. Illinois Route 1/17 was closed as a result until 3:15 pm that day. The dump truck was driving west and was stopped by a flagman with a construction crew at 9500 E. Road Illinois Route 1/17. A passenger car was in line behind the dump truck. A semitruck was arriving to the scene but, unable top stop, crushed the passenger car between the two large vehicles.
The passenger vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Journey minivan, burst into flames, along with the semitruck, and a fourth vehicle was forced into a ditch to avoid another collision. Police were finally able to reach the minivan and identify the victims the following day. A couple from Shelby, Illinois was positively identified. The driver, Laura Basham, 64, and the passenger, Barry Basham, 61, were killed in the collision.
Troy Farney, 42, of Forrest, was driving the semitruck that failed to stop in time. He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed, according to the police report. The truck drivers were transported from the scene to Riverside Medical Center and released.
