What is ADT Inc.?

ADT Inc. (formerly known as “The ADT Corporation”) is an American commercial/residential security service headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. ADT became an independent public company in 2012 and has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2013.

ADT has received thousands of complaints via the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in the past three years, consisting of product/service problems, billing problems, and advertising/sales problems in that order.

Can’t Cancel Your Contract?

There is a pattern of consumers reporting difficulty in terminating their contracts with ADT either within or beyond the contracts’ minimum lengths. Complaints also consist of trouble reaching out to customer service, as ADT doesn’t accept consumer complaints via email; no-show technicians for scheduled service calls; and problems with third parties and dealers of ADT. For example, in 2018, ADT violated the Kansas Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) in Sedgwick County, Kansas, by working with an unlicensed contractor, EVO Alarm LLC, in that jurisdiction.

Unfortunately, these complaints are just the beginning for ADT. Between customer service issues, contract issues, and defective products, customers are left wondering what options they have regarding their consumer rights.

We Fix Complaints When Customer Service Won’t

Has ADT used misleading sales tactics? Have you received poor service? Do you have complaints with billing? Do you want customer service at ADT to listen?

If your complaints haven’t been heard, we can help. At Mike Agruss Law we help customers who have been mistreated by big companies and we turn your complaints into resolutions. We’ll not only file your legal demands with ADT, we’ll negotiate with the company. If your claim isn’t resolved through these negotiations, we’ll work through the legal process that is outlined in your ADT contract, which is typically arbitration.

Mike Agruss Law gets results — including zero balances, refunds, and other compensation.

Here’s How to Make Big Companies Listen

It can be frustrating when you rely on a service and don’t get the results you’ve paid for. Big companies make mistakes every day and not only is it their fault, but it can cost you money and time and leave you with big headaches.

Have you tried calling ADT to address an issue, only to be told that the representative has no authority to do so? Or maybe you’ve tried talking to someone higher up in the company, only to be ignored, dismissed, or they take too long, continuing to waste your precious time. Maybe you’ve sent an email to the company which only resulted in a prefabricated response or they never follow through with what they’ve promised.

When you’re limited in your choices for service providers or you’re locked into a contract, what can you do?

Fortunately, you do have options.

Use Arbitration to Settle Your Complaint

Most companies like ADT have an arbitration clause in their contracts to prevent being taken to court for traditional litigation. This is actually an advantage for the consumer. When you request an arbitration hearing, an independent third party (the arbitrator) with knowledge of the particular type of situation will listen to the facts from both sides and make an impartial, binding decision. ADT will have to do a lot of work and there is no guarantee that they will have a successful outcome.

Arbitration is Fast, Inexpensive, and Private

Arbitration with ADT is conducted through the American Arbitration Association (AAA). According to the AAA Consumer Due Process Protocol, arbitration through AAA will comply with their Statement of Principles, which includes:

  • The process is fundamentally fair – All parties are entitled to qualified, competent, impartial arbitrators who will conduct a fair hearing.
  • You get access to all relevant information – This includes reasonable costs, confidentiality, reasonable time limits, and meeting times and/or locations that are agreeable to both parties.
  • Transparency – AAA provides clear arbitration agreements and the ability for each side to hire their own representation.
  • Just process – Arbitration allows the arbitrator to award the same relief as traditional litigation in a binding decision.
  • Alternative to arbitration – Mediation and the ability to take the case to small claims court should be available in some cases.

Arbitration Gives you Control and Leverage

When ADT is alerted that you plan to pursue arbitration, they know it will cost them money out of pocket. Not only do they run the risk of losing the case, but they will also pay for their mistake(s) and the arbitration itself. This gives you more leverage with your demands.

If ADT doesn’t meet those demands and you have a real complaint, Mike Agruss Law can help by representing you in arbitration where you will get a fair, just, and transparent hearing.

Control and Leverage Trigger Faster Settlements

Large companies like ADT don’t like the uncertainty and loss of control that comes with arbitration. Not only do they lose the advantage in the situation, but you’re on equal footing with them in the eyes of arbitration.

The first step in taking on ADT is to formally raise your complaint. Our lawyers at Mike Agruss Law can help you to do so. We will send a letter of demands to the corporate offices of ADT, letting them know that you’re ready to begin arbitration if a satisfactory resolution is not achieved. Typically, this is 30 days, but it will depend on your specific contract with ADT.

Approximately 50% of cases will settle before proceeding to an arbitration hearing during this time. However, if ADT doesn’t offer a reasonable settlement within the appropriate time frame, the next step would be filing a case with AAA. Mike Agruss Law will not only put together the necessary paperwork for arbitration, but we will also help you take the next steps in the arbitration process.

UDAAP and Arbitration

UDAAP is an acronym representing laws that prohibit Unfair, Deceptive, or Abusive Acts or Practices in the context of trade or business. This includes misrepresentation, deception, false advertising, or false promises. These laws emerged following the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that was enacted in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The ultimate goal with these laws is geared towards protecting consumers involved in financial transactions, educating consumers on their rights, and allowing them access to information and resources to best inform their decisions.

UDAAP laws are regulated by two organizations: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC expanded the initial UDAAP laws in 2004 to include unfair and deceptive acts and practices. Some standards for unfairness, in particular, include if it causes or is likely to cause substantial injury to consumers, the injury is not reasonably avoidable by consumers, and the injury is not outweighed by countervailing benefits to consumers or to competition.

Every state has UDAAP laws, which can vary widely. However, the lawyers at Mike Agruss Law understand these laws and can use them to get compensation for deceptive practices, representing consumers throughout the country in cases of arbitration at no cost to them. The company will not only pay the consumer, but they will also pay my fees as well. The consumer will never pay me a cent.

If you’re dealing with an issue with ADT, you might try filing a complaint with the BBB or the customer service team with ADT. Unfortunately, these avenues won’t always lead to a successful resolution for you, the customer. Instead, you may want to consider an experienced arbitration lawyer to take on your case.

Arbitration is a very useful tool for resolving disputes, and Mike Agruss Law can help. With our expert guidance, we bring the big companies to the table and provide the support needed to get your bills corrected, credit reports fixed, improper fees refunded, and more. Let us pick up the sword for you; you have nothing to lose.

How Do I File a Complaint Against ADT?

We will use your state’s UDAAP law to file a complaint in Arbitration on your behalf at no cost to you. UDAAP laws include misrepresentation, deception, false advertising, or false promises. Under your state’s UDAAP law, you are likely entitled to money damages for your actual damages. Plus, the other side will pay our fees and costs. You will not pay us a penny.

I realize that you\'re not in Oklahoma but perhaps you have a colleague? 9 months ago I had ADT install a 2 camera/9 sensor system. I paid $350 for a second control console that was never installed nor has it been connected to the system. The doorbell camera goes inop repeatedly as well, reporting bad battery. It is powered by the 28v doorbell circuit. I was never shown the ADT Control app that arms/disarms the system until my last complaint call several months ago (for inop equipment and the control console that wasn\'t installed). I called today to cancel service and contract sue to failure to fulfill the original contract. I was told that\'s irrelevant and that I\'ll pay the early termination fee or face collections. Any help or direction to local legal assistance is appreciated! Thank you

Unfair deceptive, abusive practices, and acts in Illinois with respect to contracting for ADT services and equipment, which turned into a bait and switch, and the billing issues involve failure to disclose what is being charged on the invoice for monthly services, taxes and fees, and false and misleading sales tactics involving their digital storage for recorded video from the security DVR in a tiered fashion using digital clip storage, which rigs a customers account on a monthly basis to utilize all storage data, causing the DVR to stop recording, and thereby negating the concept of security via videos for which ADT charges, not in terms of gigabytes, but rather the number of times a camera motion sensor is activated. I contracted with ADT in July 2020 and have been trying to get out of contract ever since. ADT would not let me reduce my services or cancel my services for the duration of the contract, failed to inform me of an annual permit requirement for my county sheriff, failed to inform me that if the permit was not paid annually, I could be fined by the county sheriff. ADT also continued to refuse to provide requested itemized invoices when I repeatedly called to inquire why the billing invoices referred to the document as a statement and indicated that itemized billing was available in the ADT portal, which never existed. I sustained a traumatic brain injury in July 2021, and it has taken me this many years to realize that the invoices themselves still do not and never have disclosed the itemization of actual charges, not online or printed versions. When I requested to remove the cameras from my home because they did not work for the last 2 years, I was refused technician support in my home because I was out of contract and told to renew or else they could not provide me with onsite support technicians, or they wanted to charge me service calls for equipment that did not work on Xfinity or Verizon when I switched providers because ADT blamed the internet for the cameras having perpetual inability to connect to the internet all of these years and at times I would be 500 miles away from home at my family\'s home in Nashville unable to press a master reset button on a camera, so my entire security system video footage would go down, which is what I was paying for, and ADT kept forcing me to pay the fees, claiming it was not their fault the cameras never worked. I was assaulted in my own home on camera and was told by police it was a matter of he said she said because I could not prove anything without my cameras operating. My neighbors\' car was vandalized and my cameras were down and could not determine who did this. The worst part about all of this is when I terminated my services, my account was turned over to collections before I received the next monthly invoice. The camera motion sensors I have been told create a lapse in the video recordings, and camera motion can be triggered by wind. Once again, an act of god that ADT blames for its services being deficient, and I am still forced to pay. I have tried to dispute charges to no avail. The sales process was fraudulent and misleading. I made it clear I wanted my cameras recording at all times and that I essentially wanted a CCTV camera system, not digital clips sold to me in the increments of 5k, 6, 10k clips, meaning if the wind blows 5k times in one month, the data recording stops! No joke! So when camera video clip storage needs to be reset because it is maxed out, it just stops recording! Wait, what? And a customer does not know this until you go back and try to find the video wherein you were assaulted and punched in the face, but it doesn\'t exist because the cameras were down! Yes, this happened to me! How could video clip storage maxing out prevent a camera from recording?!? What is the point of the cameras then, and why cant this company provide a more accurate and quantifiable method of recording, for example, in terms of gigabytes or megabytes?!? Because when we purchase other services taxable as technology related, it is quantifiable in terms of gigabytes and megabytes, not the number of times I may have waived my hands in front of a camera to trigger a motion or the number of times the wind blew to trigger a motion! My safety was dependent upon this terrible company not protecting me, so when I called them crying to tell them I missed my perpetrator assaulting me, so I could not actually pursue pressing charges, ADT sent a remote to me as I guess a way for me to contact 911. I want my money back for all the years that ADT did not protect me.

ADT sold us a security and smoke detection system for our vacation home in Flat Rock. When the Tech came to install the system, he discovered the existing smoke detectors in the house were not functioning. He told us that ADT could not install their system because they could not be the primary smokes in the home. He then said, but he could install the security system and that we could have someone come out and fix the existing smokes and then ADT would come back out and install theirs. Sounded easy enough. We\'ve now had multiple security companies come out and no one will take the liability of turning on the existing smokes while ADT is there. We\'re now stuck. ADT did not honor their agreement with us, and won\'t let us out of the contract even though they have a 6 month money back guarantee. The system was installed on 12/14/23. Now we have a multi-million dollar home with no functioning smoke detectors and seemingly no solution other than to pay ADT $4k for nothing.

I have been trying for just under a year to cancel my account with ADT. I\'ve made multiple calls that have consumed ridiculous amounts of time, sent letters, etc. I was told that it was taken care of only to have more bills continue to come, and now they are threatening to send my information to the credit bureau and into debt collections if I do not pay them. I just do not know what else to do and need help.

I Have issues with ADT since i got it installed about 3 weeks ago (several of the days, my alarm didnt work). I called yesterday to cancel because the price the service came with no cameras and the cost to add was far beyond the competitors. I was told i only had 3 days to cancel and no i would have to pay the remaining 75% of the contract. I need to know if my only option is to continue with a service i do not want?

Hello. I attempted to end my ADT services in July of 2023 when the system falsely alerted the police 7+ times in 48h. I tried emailing, calling multiple times and they tell me I can\'t cancel unless I sign into my account, which had a password change I did not authorize. I emailed them canceling and they still do not recognize the withdrawl.

Hello, My partner and I need help with my situation regarding a collection agency. I signed a five-year contract with ADT when they installed the security alarm system. I discovered it wasn’t accessible for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals like me. Within 24 hours, I called and appealed, but ADT didn’t take action for weeks. Finally, a technician confirmed the system wasn’t feasible for us. Two false alarms went off. The first one, we didn’t even get any notifications from ADT. Then the second one, the text message was received after the police arrived. It was traumatic and humiliated us in the neighborhood. So embarrassing. We\'ve been calling and emailing ADT almost daily for many months. They repeatedly referred us to different departments, hung up on us to avoid canceling our contract, and even ghosted us via email. Despite promises to cancel our contract with no penalty due to inaccessibility, they didn\'t follow through. We disputed payments with our bank, and ADT agreed to cancel but later claimed we owed them money, exceeding the actual contract amount. We sent the 8-page letter, along with other pieces of evidence, to ADT at their Florida address (1501 Yamato Rd, Boca Raton, FL 33431) last July. However, we have received no response from them, and I didn’t realize that I could obtain a certificate to prove that they received my letter. We wrote a detailed letter with evidence to their Florida address, and now I\'ve received a letter from a debt collection agency that says we owed the money (must respond by January 10). Please let me know if you need any additional information to demonstrate that they discriminated against us by failing to address our issues within the promised 24 hours and the first 6 months. They also refused to cancel the service even when we mentioned thousands of times that products are inaccessible, which is wrongful. According to their policy, they are supposed to cancel our contract for free within 6 months or within 24 hours if they cannot resolve the problem (source: safewise - I can’t type a full link because it wouldn’t allow me to submit the form). We have diligently followed the necessary steps by calling and emailing them multiple times over the course of weeks and months (I request that the debt collection agency ask ADT for call logs and notes). Despite this, they are now charging us more than 75% for the termination fee. While the original contract amount is approximately $3.7k, we received a bill for $5k. ADT is doing it with retaliation by adding an additional $2.4k to the bill and labeling it as an installment plan charge, even though they have already charged us $2.5k for contract cancellation. This does not make any sense. We urgently need your assistance because our deadline is January 10th, 2024. Fingers crossed. Thank you, LiAn

Hello, I’ve been texting your phone number and received no responses at all. ADT is harrassing me with letters threatening me with sending me to the collection agency when I told them that I wanted to cancel the contract due to two false alarms that didn’t even notify us to disable the alarms. They gave the inaccessible products to us as Deaf individuals. Now they sent me letters saying I owe them excessive than what my contract’s amount. I really need help with this. Thank you. I can be reached at [email protected] or text at 510 857 4110 (my phone doesn’t have a phone service since I’m Deaf). Thank you. LiAn

I\'ve just waited for a week for a return call and then made to pay a fee for the tech\'s s time labor and milage. My equipment is still under warranty. This is not the first time I have been charged an additional fee, This is after almost 3000.00 in installation fees.

We called ADT because our 18-year daughter was going to be left alone at the house. The ADT blue system was defective and would not work correctly. We called ADT and they said no problem send it back. ADT came out to the house and swindled and rushed us through the process of installing the system while telling us that each additional sensor he was installing was only going to cost us 3 dollars. We were trusting in the fact that he should be telling us the truth, while all along he was screwing us out of thousands of dollars. We uninstalled the system shortly after the installation. We collectively have spent well over 20 hours either on hold or being transferred around to one person or another at the end of which we ALWAYS got hung up on. Now we are receiving bills with them demanding we pay them the entire amount owed. If what they are telling us is true, it will go to collections in 30 days. We don\'t feel it is our responsibility to settle this debt because they were deceitful and not forthcoming about what the system would actually cost us, and the technician absolutely took advantage of us.
