Whether due to a wrong business decision or an emergency, anyone can fall on difficult financial times. A debt collection agency may call you about overdue bills when that happens. In their efforts to collect debts, these agencies can badger consumers in ways that the law prohibits.

If JP Jensen Collections contacts you about a debt, contacting an attorney can help you deal with oppressive behavior. The debt collection attorneys from Mike Agruss Law will protect your consumer rights and pursue legal action against all parties acting against the law.

What is JP Jensen Collections LLC?

JP Jensen Collections is a firm that specializes in judgment collection and accounts receivable recovery. The company also offers bill outsourcing and litigation services to its clients. With headquarters in Columbia, Maryland, JP Jensen Collections provides its customers the ability to locate hard-to-find assets and collect judgment packages.

What is JP Jensen Collections LLC’s Better Business Bureau Rating?

JP Collections LLC has a Better Business Bureau profile in the collections agencies category. The profile makes it clear that JP Collections is not BBB accredited. The company has a 1 out of 5-star rating, and a customer review states that the staff at JP Jensen Collections has been harassing the consumer via email and phone calls after garnishing their wages.

How Do I Know if JP Jensen Collections is Harassing Me?

Whether you owe a debt or are mistakenly being targeted because of an error, you don’t have to put up with abusive behavior. Many consumers are unaware of their rights and what the law prohibits debt collection agencies from doing. Understanding consumer protection laws will make it clear when JP Jensen Collections is crossing the line into illegal territory.

If you feel uncomfortable with the debt collector’s behavior, your federally protected rights are probably being violated. Experiencing shame, anxiety, and fear are common due to debt collection agency overreach.

How Does the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act Protect Consumers?

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) protects consumers by setting a framework within which debt collectors can operate. The law prohibits JP Jensen Collections from calling you at all hours of the day and night. They cannot call you multiple times a day or use threatening language.

Debt collectors cannot threaten you with arrest or violence. The FDCPA allows you to sue debt collection agencies for up to $1,000 per violation and recovery of your costs and attorney fees.

Changes in the Legal Landscape for Consumers

Other than the protection you receive from the FDCPA, state governments are taking the initiative in consumers’ favor. The New York Attorney General recently sent letters to major debt collection businesses and credit card companies to inform them to avoid abusive practices in light of new legislation.

Specifically, state law in New York will drastically restrict debt collectors in their ability to sue consumers for old debts.

Each state has laws in place to protect vulnerable consumers. The statute of limitations on debt collection varies from state to state, with most cases placing it in the three to six-year range. Whether they are settled or not, past-due debts may remain on your credit report for up to seven years.

More legislation may follow in the years to come, potentially offering consumers additional protection. Contacting an expert in the field can help you better navigate your case and remove the collection item from your credit report

What Should I Do if JP Jensen Collections Contacts Me?

Even if the caller is provoking you through abusive language and threats, it’s important not to lash out at them. Instead, contact an experienced debt collection attorney. You can notify JP Jensen Collections via written letter to stop contacting you. Any communication the company initiates with you counts as harassment.

You can notify the Federal Trade Commission through their website about JP Jensen Collection’s harassing behavior. Alternatively, you can contact your state Attorney General’s office to file a complaint.
