Just received a letter from Bass and Associates stating that my husband owes over $16,000. We don't know what this debt would be, nor does it show up on any of his credit reports. It sounds like this company is not legit; what should my next step be?

My wife and I went to file our taxes jointly this year for the first time since getting married and instead of receiving what we thought would be a nice federal tax return the US Department of Education seized our returns stating one of her student loans was in default and was placed with Bass & Associates. We contacted the US Department of Education to make them aware that Navient who she had the student loans with said her loan had been paid in full as she was in the income based repayment plan. The US Department of Education noted that they are aware how Navient operates and that wasn't the case it just meant the loan was no longer with them so it was showing it being paid off. We never received a letter, email, or phone call letting us know the loan had been sold off to Bass & Associates and therefore went into default after 270 days. We had the understanding the loan was paid off based off of Navient telling us it was so thought nothing like this would occur. Currently Bass & Associates is asking for a copy of our 1040 Tax Return Form. We reached out to them this morning and even though the loan is in my wife's name they said since we filed taxes jointly the payments would be calculated based off our joint income which neither of us understand. If the loan is in my wife's name how could they factor in both our salaries for her payment amount!

If you would like help in dealing with Bass and Associates, reach out. We would be happy to have a free, no-obligation consultation with you. Thanks, Mike

Hi Jennifer. Bass and Associates is a legitimate debt collector. Have you asked them to provide you with a debt validation letter? Is it possibly a debt over student loans? I will give you a call to discuss your next steps. Thanks, Mike
