What is the Costco Anywhere Visa Card?

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card is a Citi-provided rewards credit card that also serves as a Costco membership ID with no annual fee. Cardholders can earn rewards on purchases anywhere that Visa cards are accepted, such as: 4% cashback on gasoline for the first $7,000 per year; 3% cashback on eligible restaurant and travel purchases; 2% on other Costco and Costco.com purchases; and 1% on all other purchases.

Citi receives thousands of consumer complaints via the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for service problems and unlawful harassment of consumers. If you are being harassed over this credit card, contact our office today for a free consultation.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card Lawsuits

If you want to know just how unhappy consumers are with this card, take a look at the number of complaints consumers have made online. Nowadays, most original creditors, credit card companies, etc. have arbitration clauses, which means that if you have a complaint against that company, you must file your claim in arbitration. Arbitration limits discovery, is not public, has a limited appellate process, and, most importantly, is funded primarily by banks and big businesses. While it can be difficult to get a fair chance in arbitration, the good news is we have filed hundreds of credit harassment cases in arbitration, and we know how to aggressively fight these cases against the big banks and businesses even when arbitration is necessary.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card Complaints

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) protects you from robocalls, which are those annoying, automated, recorded calls that computers make all day long. You can tell it’s a robocall because either no one responds on the other end of the line, or there is a delay when you pick up the phone before a live person responds. You can receive $500 per call if Citi violates the TCPA. Have you received a message from this agency that sounds pre-recorded or cut-off at the beginning or end? These are tell-tale signs that the message is pre-recorded, and if you have these messages on your cell phone, you may have a TCPA case against the agency.

The Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA) protects electronic payments that are deducted from bank accounts. If Citi took unauthorized deductions from your bank account, you may have an EFTA claim against the agency. Citi, like most collection agencies, wants to set up recurring payments from consumers; imagine how much money it can earn if hundreds, even thousands, of consumers electronically pay them $50 – $100 or more per month. If you agreed to this type of reoccurring payment, the agency must follow certain steps to comply with the EFTA. Did Citi continue to take electronic payments after you told them to stop? Did they take more money from your checking account than you agreed to?  If so, we can discuss your rights and a potential case under the EFTA.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) works to ensure that no information reported to your credit report is false. In essence, it gives you the right to dispute those inaccuracies that you find on your credit report. We’ve handled many cases in which a debt collection agency reported debt on a consumer’s credit report to obtain leverage over the consumer. If Citi is on your credit report, they may tell you that they’ll remove the debt from your credit report if you pay it; this is commonly known as “pay for delete.” If the original creditor is on your report rather than the debt collector, and you pay off the debt, both entities should accurately report this on your credit report.

Several states also have laws to provide their citizens an additional layer of protection. For example, if you live in California, Florida, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, or Wisconsin, you may be able to add a state-law claim to your federal law claim above.  North Carolina, for example, has one of the most consumer-friendly statutes in the country: if you live in NC and are harassed over a debt, you may receive $500 – $4,000 in damages per violation. We work with a local counsel in NC and our NC clients have received some great results in debt collection harassment cases. If you live in North Carolina and are being harassed by a debt collector, you have the leverage to obtain a great settlement.

How do we Use the Law to Help You?

We will use state and federal laws to immediately stop Citi’s debt collection. We will send a cease-and-desist letter to stop the harassment today, and if Citi violates the FDCPA, EFTA, FCRA, or any state law, you may be entitled to money damages. For example, under the FDCPA, you may receive up to $1,000 in damages plus actual damages. The FDCPA also has a fee-shift provision, which means the debt collector will pay your attorneys’ fees and costs. If you have a TCPA case against the agency, we will handle it based on a contingency fee and you won’t pay us a dime unless you win.

THAT’S NOT ALL…

We have helped thousands of consumers stop phone calls.  We know how to stop the harassment and get you money damages. Once again: you will not pay us a dime for our services. We will help you based on a fee-shift provision and/or contingency fee, and the debt collector will pay your attorneys’ fees and costs.

What if Costco Anywhere Visa Card is on My Credit Report?

Based on our experience, some debt collectors may credit-report, which means one may mark your credit report with the debt they are trying to collect. In addition to or instead of the debt collector, the original creditor may also be on your credit report in a separate entry, and it’s important to properly identify these entities because you will want both to update your credit report if or when you pay off the debt.

THE GOOD NEWS IS…

If Costco Anywhere Visa Card is on your credit report, we can help you dispute it. Mistakes on your credit report can be very costly: along with causing you to pay higher interest rates, you may be denied credit, insurance, a rental home, a loan, or even a job because of these mistakes. Some mistakes may include someone else’s information on your credit report, inaccurate public records, stale collection accounts, or even being a victim of identity theft. If you have a mistake on your credit report, there is a process to dispute it, and my office will help you obtain your credit report and dispute any inaccurate information.

REMEMBER…

If a credit reporting agency violates its obligations under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you may be entitled to statutory damages up to $1,000, and the credit reporting agency will be required to fix the error. The FCRA also has a fee-shift provision, which means the credit reporting agency will pay your attorneys’ fees and costs. You won’t owe us a dime for our services. We have helped hundreds of consumers fix inaccurate information on their credit reports, and we’re ready to help you, too.

Complaints against Citi

If you’re on this page, chances are you are just like the hundreds of consumers out there being harassed by Citi. Here are some of the BBB reviews and complaints against Citi:

  1. “Illegal late fees and customer service issues: Citi charged my account $50 in illegal late fees in 2018. Citi Card has been obstructing and hindering my attempts to resolve this issue. 5 different Customer Service agents have not helped me. I have spent at least 4 hours with Citi Card on this issue. Several agents I contacted were overseas – they knew absolutely nothing. Several hung up on me before I could finish describing my problem. Citi Card is engaging in stalling tactics to keep consumers away from their money.”

  2. “Calls many times a day looking for someone I don’t know and doesn’t live here. I emailed and told them to stop calling and they don’t.”

  3. “There have been three attempts to remove a charge of $9.33 from my account. The first time was successful and this company sent a letter which stated it was removed. This is false. After multiple attempts to remove it permanently and for this company to contact the credit bureau to remove this huge point loss of my personal credit, it is still not removed.”

  4. “Citigroup placed fraudulent interest and purchase charges on my account. The problem became worse with each successive call that I made to the bank. They refused to take responsibility for it.”

  5. “Received an email from this company regarding a fraud alert. Called several times to check on the problem and was told that I need to give my security answer, which I did, to have the block removed. These people would not accept me giving my security code, date of birth, social sec. etc. Any real pertinent information that was used to accept this card wasn’t accepted. They forcefully want me to give them information regarding other assets and credit cards that have nothing at all to do with this account. Representatives are asking for my mortgage information, car loan information etc. They want everything that has nothing to do with the information and security answers that I used to setup the account. Was told I would receive a callback and no call.”

Cases We’ve Handled Against Citi

I think you’ll agree when we say that threats and harassment from collection agencies can be pretty intimidating. However, we can stop the harassment and get you money damages under the law, and the collection agency will pay your attorneys’ fees and costs. Here are some cases we’ve handled against Citi:

  1. Anne S. v. Citi – In May 2019, Anne of Minneapolis, Minnesota, filed a claim against Citi for violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). Complaints consisted of harassing phone calls, including robocalls and continuing after the plaintiff requested that the calls stop.

  2. Randy O. v. Citi – In April 2019, Randy of Red Bud, Illinois, filed a claim against Citi for violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). Similar to case one, complaints consisted of harassing phone calls which included robocalls and continued after the plaintiff requested that the calls stop.

  3. Eric G. v. Citi – In April 2019, Eric of Sacramento, California, filed a claim against Citi for violations of the Electronic Funds Transfer Act (EFTA), namely an unauthorized and unlawful withdrawal of funds from the plaintiff’s checking account.

Top Debt Collection Violations

Debt collection laws provided a laundry list of what collectors can and cannot do while collecting a debt. Based on our years of experience handling thousands of debt collection harassment cases, here’s what collection agencies most often to do to violate the law:

  1. Called you about a debt you do not owe.
  2. Called you at work after you told them you cannot receive calls at work.
  3. Left you a message without identifying the company’s name.
  4. Left you a message without disclosing that the call is from a debt collector.
  5. Called third parties (family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors) even though the collection agency knows your contact information.
  6. Disclosed to a third party (family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors) that you owe a debt.
  7. Contacted you after you said stop calling.
  8. Threatened you with legal action (such as a lawsuit or wage garnishment).
  9. Called you before 8:00 AM or after 9:00 PM.
  10. Continued to call you after you have told the collector you cannot pay the debt.
  11. Communicated (phone or letter) with you after you filed for bankruptcy.
  12. Failed to mark the debt on your credit report as disputed after you disputed the debt.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I have to pay your fees and costs for helping me with my consumer rights case? No. We handle consumer rights cases based on a fee-shift provision and/or a contingency fee. That means either the other side pays your fees and costs, or we take a percentage of your recovery. Whether it’s a fee-shift case or a contingency-fee case, we don’t get paid unless you get paid, and you’ll never owe us a penny for our time.

  2. What are the damages under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act? You can get $500 per robocall, or $1,500 per robocall if the robocalls were willful. In any type of settlement, oftentimes Defendants pay much less than $500 per call. However, if there are 50 calls at issue, even at $250 per call, your case could settle for $12,500.00.

  3. Are there state laws that protect me from original creditors? Yes! Several states also have laws that provide their citizens an additional layer of protection. For example, if you live in California, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin, you have additional state-law rights.

  4. What type of debt is covered under state laws that protect me from original creditors? Only consumer debt, such as personal, family, and household debts. For example, the money you owe on a personal credit card, an auto loan, a medical bill, or a utility bill. State laws usually do not cover debts you incurred to run a business, or debts regarding unpaid taxes, or traffic tickets.

  5. Does the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act apply to banks or credit card companies? No. Only third-party debt collectors are bound by the FDCPA. That is, original creditors, such as credit card companies and banks, are not bound by the FDCPA.

  6. Are mistakes on credit reports common? Yes! Are you one of the 40 million Americans that have a mistake on their credit report? Mistakes on your credit report can be very costly. Along with causing you to pay higher interest rates, you may be denied credit, insurance, a rental home, a loan, or even a job because of these mistakes. Some mistakes may include someone else’s information on your credit report, inaccurate public records, stale collection accounts, or maybe you were a victim of identity theft.

  7. What do I do if I have a mistake on my credit report? If you have a mistake on your credit report, there is a process to dispute them. My office will help you pull your credit report and dispute any inaccurate information. If a credit reporting agency violates its obligations under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”), you may be entitled to statutory damages up to $1,000.00, plus the credit reporting agency will be required to fix the error. The FCRA also has a fee-shift provision. This means, the credit reporting agency pays your attorney’s fees and costs. Therefore, you will not pay me a penny for my time. To speed up the process, please get a free copy of your credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com. You can also learn more about the FCRA and your rights at http://www.agrussconsumerlaw.com/practices/common-credit-report-errors/.

I have a ex-girlfriend that set up a account under my business name in 2013. She used the card which shows her name, she got the bills emailed to her. She payed little and continued to charge. She left and stop paying. I had no idea till later there was a balance. They came after me and I filed a complaint. Security heard the complaint and told me that she indeed used it and closed her card. They gave me a much smaller amount and I began to pay it. They agreed and now came back and tried to charge me the entire amount. The won’t hear any discussion even after they sent me a letter and it was recorded over the phone

I have been charges several late fees when my statement shows timely payments far in excess of the minimum due. I also believe that the COSTCO-VISA charges an absurd rate of interest, as much as 4.3% per month.

This is a letter that I wrote to Costco Citibank dispute department at Costco corporate level because after months and months of trying to work with Costco Citibank and Costco Citibank corporate dispute I was denied a refund for a damaged and defective stove that’s under the buyers protection clause for $1000 protection due to Goedekers the appliance store refusing to allow Citibank to issue a credit In regards to: My refund for damaged and defective stove, to uphold buyers protection clause for damage or defective products purchased with Costco Citibank visa and to bring to light a wolf in disguise using Costco excellent reputation Dear Christina Schaefer, Thank you for speaking with me today and using your resources to help me secure a refund for the damaged and defective stove I purchased with Costco Citibank Visa. I am a loyal and happy Executive Costco member and recently went through extensive treatment as a cancer patient, therefore it imperative that I can cook at home and have a working stove due to my compromise immune system and the very contagious COVID-19. I am requesting your help with a full refund for the damaged defective stove in the amount $841.00 plus interest which was purchased with a Costco Citibank Visa. Citibank Visa has abandoned me in my pursuit to receive a full refund. Even though Citibank are fully aware of Goedekers appliance managers statements “I am due a full refund and the stove does not need to be recovered” within an email and a three-way phone call with Citibank corporate response office. Costco Citibank Visa had many opportunities uphold the buyer protection clause with Goedekers acknowledgement for a full refund is due however Goedekers continuously came up with revolving door of new excuses and demands that Citibank visa used to not issue me a credit. • As an example the final excuse from Goedekers is that I have not met the requirements by packaging and paying for the stove to be shipped back to the appliance store. Both Costco Citibank Visa and Goedekers knew that this was non-attainable due to the very expensive shipping cost therefore Costco Citibank Visa use that excuse to abandon me and not enforce Goedekers to refund me There are two villains (Fraudulent and bad faith business practice) in this situation. • First villain, Costco Citibank Executive response team who refused to uphold the damage protection clause for up to $1000 on purchases and this villains is using Costco’s name and excellent reputation that I trusted with a large purchase. • Second villain, Goedekers appliance management agreed and acknowledged to refund me in full, after they had exhausted all options to repair the damage and defective stove. For the last 9 months have exhausted all options that’s available to help me with a refund for a damaged and detective stove that I purchased for $841.09 with my Costco Citibank Visa from Goedekers appliance store that was delivered around January 18, 2021 1. Stove was delivered end of January 2021. The defective damage stove was not noticeable until the stove was installed and plugged in (1.5 hour installation service $400 I paid). Once I turned on the stove, I noticed heat was escaping and food was cooking unevenly because of the large gap from the oven door would not close properly. Food burns in the back of the oven and the food in front is undercooked. I contacted Goedekers immediately and customer service was very slow to respond and then provided me with incorrect email to send claim to Goedekers took responsibility and wanted an opportunity to repair the damages or defective stove. I reported the damages within three days of installation (5 days after delivery). The end result, 5 months later and 100’s of hours and months invested, Goedekers customer service on May 10, 2021 manager Tim in writing and by voicemail deemed the stove non-repairable. • “We cannot sell a used appliance, so we will refund you in full for the unit and do not need to recover it”. • In California the stove is considered abandoned one month after the May 10 email from Goedekers customer service manager email that the stove is non-repairable and will not recover stove. 2. In addition filed a dispute application with Costco Citibank Visa within 2 weeks after receiving my damage and defective stove. Once again I invested many hours to inform the dispute resolution customer service agents the steps that I was talking to support goedekers request to repair the damage stove, while the credit card resolution services continued their process to issue me a credit for the purchase of the stove. • Sometime in April I was informed by Costco Citibank Visa resolution employees that my case has been closed and I’ve been issued $160 credit towards my losses. I told them that this was unacceptable this doesn’t even cover interest for the purchase that has accumulated on my credit card for nine months. • Unable to recover the full purchase price for the stove, due to “Goedekers refusal to issue a refund” shocked and confused that Costco Visa credit card company has just failed to upheld the damage merchandise protection clause. 3. Final attempt to recover my losses with Costco Citi executive response team in New York. June 2nd contact Carla and explain the problem. Carla established a three-way calls with Goedekers customer service representative Simone. • Simone reviewed the file and agreed yes I am due a refund. Simone Stated Yes you are due a refund and can expect a full refund within 3 to 5 days. • 2 weeks went by no refund and Citibank Visa were unable to uphold the merchant credit because Goedekers continuously create new demands and excuse for reasons not to issue a refund credit. This has been a revolving door for the last 9 months with goedekers manipulation and dominance over Costco Citibank Visa dispute resolution employees by stating a refund is due and will be issued, but never issued a refund for the damaged defective stove. Goedekers has been frustrating revolving door for stating full refund will be issued, but then use non valid excuses each time Costco visa resolution team inquire where the refund is. I am grateful and appreciative for your help to assist me in upholding the buyer’s protection clause for the defective stove for a full refund and hopefully interest accrued on the purchase that I have not paid off and also restore my confidence for future expenses purchases with Costco co-branded Citi visa credit card Sincerely, Wendy Please see attached emails goedekers abandoned stove May 10, 2021 and agreeing to refund me in full for damaged stove Also attached Citi executive response team confirming with a three-way call Goedekers will refund in full $841.09 in 3 to 5 business days.
