5-Year-Old Boy Dies after Accident at Oak Brook Wedding Reception
Authorities have identified Luca Berlingerio of Glenview, IL, as the 5-year-old boy who died after a granite table top fell on him at a wedding reception in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook last week.
According to the Oak Brook Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on September 4 at Drake Hotel on 2301 York Road in Oak Brook. Surveillance footage from the hotel reportedly showed the boy laying across a table with a granite top, which was positioned behind a sofa in an area where other children were playing.
“As the children were getting up, leaving the area, the victim began to slide off the table, constructed with a granite top, and held the edge with his fingers to slow his descent as he slid backwards,” police said in a release. “As he dismounted the table, the table fell on top of the child’s head, causing significant injury.”
Berlingerio suffered severe head injuries. Paramedics reportedly tried to resuscitate him as he was rushed to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Every year, millions of children across the U.S. are treated for injuries caused by various accidents, many of which are the result of another party’s negligence. As much as we try to protect children, we cannot always keep them completely safe from every dangerous situation.
Since the incident occurred on Drake Hotel’s property, Luca Berlingerio’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. A “wrongful death” is one that occurs due to the fault of another party, be it a person or a business entity such as a hotel. While taking legal action may be the last thing on the mind of someone grieving the loss of a loved one, the comfort of the responsible party being brought to justice can provide a much-needed sense of closure to survivors.
