Andrew Peterson Identified as Cyclist Struck and Killed by Vehicle in Chicago, IL
Authorities in Chicago have identified 37-year-old Andrew Peterson as the cyclist who was struck by a vehicle in the South Loop last Wednesday.
According to Chicago police, the incident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. May 20 at an intersection in the 600 block of West Taylor Street. Peterson was eastbound on a bicycle when he was struck by a Volkswagen that was northbound as he attempted to cross the intersection.
Peterson was rushed to an area hospital, where he died on Saturday morning. An autopsy conducted Sunday confirmed that he died from injuries related to the collision. His death was ruled an accident.
The driver of the Volkswagen, only identified as a 27-year-old male, was cited for failing to reduce speed, police said. Chicago police are still investigating the incident.
Chicago has a national reputation as one of the best major cities for cycling in the U.S., but the activity can also be very dangerous. Over 500,000 cyclists are treated for bicycle-related injuries every year, and an additional 700 cyclists are killed.
Bicycle accidents in Chicago occur for a variety of reasons, including:
- A driver failing to yield the right of way.
- A driver failing to see a cyclist approaching an intersection.
- A driver making a right-hand turn in front of a cyclist moving in the same direction.
- A driver opening his or her door into the path of an oncoming cyclist.
- A driver turning left into the path of a cyclist.
Pending the outcome of the investigation into last Wednesday's accident, Andrew Peterson’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. With the assistance of an attorney, the loved ones of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and pain and suffering following an accident.
