Beach Park Man Killed in Motorcycle-Semi Crash in Waukegan, IL

Authorities in Waukegan announced that a 58-year-old Beach Park man was killed in a motorcycle crash in Waukegan on Tuesday.

According to the Waukegan Police Department, the crash occurred at around 1:30 p.m. June 30 in the 2200 block of North Lewis Avenue. Someone driving a 44-foot freightliner semi-truck attempted to switch lanes and struck a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, only identified as a Beach Park resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police confirmed. No other injuries were reported.

A preliminary investigation indicates that both vehicles were northbound. The motorcycle had been in the lane closest to the curb and the semi-truck was in the next lane. The truck driver, only identified as a resident from Racine, Wisconsin, remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, a news release said. The results of a toxicology screen are pending.

Due to simple exposure, motorcyclists often incur a greater risk of injury or death in an accident than the occupants of other vehicles. In 2015 alone, 88,000 motorcyclists were injured in accidents, and an estimated 5,000 lost their lives. The number of motorcycle fatalities in the U.S. has more than doubled in the last decade, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Pending the outcome of the investigation into Tuesday’s accident, the Beach Park motorcyclist’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Under Illinois law, the family of wrongful death victims may legally seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering following an accident.
