Carlos Maciel-Pulido Identified as Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Wheeling, IL
Authorities in Wheeling, IL, have identified 31-year-old Carlos Maciel-Pulido as the pedestrian who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in northwest suburban Wheeling on Wednesday morning.
According to police, the hit-and-run occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m. May 20 in the 700 block of Equestrian Drive. Maciel-Pulido was walking along the street when someone driving an SUV struck him and then crashed into the front entryway of a home.
Police who arrived at the scene found the SUV partially lodged in the home, and Maciel-Pulido was found trapped underneath the vehicle. The driver was not inside the car. Witnesses told police the driver was seen fleeing the scene on foot after hitting the home.
Maciel-Pulido was extricated from under the vehicle and was pronounced dead. Witnesses told news sources that he was pinned under the vehicle for some time. He died from injuries he sustained in the crash, police confirmed.
Police brought in K-9 units to search the area for the hit-and-run driver, but the suspect was not found. They announced Thursday that the driver, who was identified as Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez, is believed to have deliberately targeted Maciel-Pulido. The incident is now considered a homicide.
A warrant for Zavala-Hernandez’s arrest was already issued less than a week ago after he allegedly assaulted his wife and cut off an ankle monitor.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, Carlos Maciel-Pulido’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. The next of kin of wrongful death victims can seek damages for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional distress following an accident.
