Chicago Man Faces Charges after Fleeing Fatal Bicycle Crash in Lombard
A Chicago man faces felony charges after police say he left the scene of a crash that killed a bicyclist in Lombard on Sunday.
According to police, the crash occurred at around 11 p.m. November 15 at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Stewart Avenue. Troy Young, 41, was reportedly riding his bicycle at the intersection when he was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver who fled the scene of the crash.
The driver, identified as 25-year-old Norris Watt of Chicago, was pulled over in Oak Brook about 30 minutes later and was taken into custody, sources indicate. He allegedly had alcohol, cannabis, ecstasy, and amphetamines in his system at the time of the crash. He was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and aggravated DUI in connection with the crash, police confirmed.
“As I have said many times in the past, this case, like all alleged DUI cases, was 100% avoidable,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berline said in a news release. “With so many mind-altering substances allegedly in his system at the time of the crash, there is absolutely no reason why Mr. Watt should have been behind the wheel of a car that night. What I find particularly disturbing are the allegations that instead of rendering aid to his victim, Mr. Watt fled the scene, leaving a dying man behind.”
Drunk driving accidents are a serious problem in the U.S., accounting for 28 percent of all traffic-related deaths reported every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Pending the outcome of the investigation into the Lombard crash, Troy Young’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. With the help of an attorney, the surviving loved ones of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and more.
