Chicago Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Pickup Truck

A Chicago man was killed Wednesday after a pickup truck backed into him in West Rogers Park, police announced.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred at around 12:10 p.m. December 3 in the 2700 block of West Jarvis Avenue near the intersection of Jarvis and Washtenaw Avenue. The driver of a pickup truck was reportedly reversing his vehicle when he ran over a pedestrian identified as Michael Guzman, 31, of Humboldt Park.

Guzman was rushed to Evanston Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His death was ruled an accident, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. No other injuries were reported.

Chicago police have not provided any additional information about the incident. It is unclear if the driver who struck Guzman faces any charges or citations. The Major Accidents Unit is reportedly investigating the incident.

Pedestrians are up to 1.5 times more like to suffer critical injuries in a roadway accident than the occupants of motor vehicles. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 47 percent of crashes that resulted in a pedestrian death involved alcohol for the driver and/or pedestrian. Pedestrians over the age of 65 are especially vulnerable; they made up 20 percent of all pedestrian deaths and 10 percent of all pedestrian injuries reported in 2017.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Michael Guzman’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. With the assistance of an Illinois wrongful death attorney, a deceased victim’s surviving loved ones can legally seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and pain and suffering following an accident.
