Christian Gonzalez Identified as Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Eisenhower Expressway in Chicago’s West Side
Police in Chicago have identified 26-year-old Christian Gonzalez of Wheeling as the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a semi-trailer truck in the city’s West Side on Sunday night.
According to Chicago police, the accident occurred at approximately 11:59 p.m. on March 22 in the westbound lane of the Eisenhower Expressway, east of Central Avenue. Gonzalez was walking along the expressway when he was struck by a semi-trailer truck traveling right in the westbound lane.
Gonzalez suffered serious injuries and was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported, police said.
Police haven’t released any more information about the crash. It is unclear if the driver of the semi-trailer truck faces any citations or charges. The investigation is ongoing.
Pedestrian accidents are a serious problem in the U.S., particularly in urban centers like Chicago. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 6,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2017. An additional 137,000 pedestrians were treated in hospitals for non-fatal traffic-related injuries. Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than the occupants of vehicles to be killed in a car crash.
As the investigation into Sunday’s crash continues, Christian Gonzalez’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. The Illinois Wrongful Death Act allows the next of kin of a deceased pedestrian accident victim to be compensated for their losses, including loss of companionship, funeral expenses, medical bills prior to death, and loss of financial support.
