Christie Harkins Dies a Month after Hit-and-Run Crash in Chicago Heights

Police in South Chicago Heights are searching for the driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash last month that critically injured a married couple from Lemont.

According to Chicago police, the crash occurred on May 26 at the intersection of Chicago Road and Sauk Trail. The couple, identified as Marvin and Christie Harkins, were approaching a green light in their Honda motorcycle when a Dodge sedan turned left into their path as they were crossing the intersection. The motorcycle struck the car’s passenger side front door, causing extensive damage, police said.

Christie Harkins, 55, died last week from injuries she suffered in the crash. Her husband, Marvin, was unresponsive after the crash and had to be placed on a ventilator, sources indicate. He remains hospitalized.

The driver of the Dodge did not stop to administer aid and continued driving into Chicago Heights, according to police. A month later, the driver still hasn’t been located. The investigation is ongoing.

On Monday, investigators released a series of surveillance camera images of the Dodge believed to have struck the Harkins. They are offering a $1,000 reward for information about the whereabouts of the vehicle or the driver. Anyone with information should call 708-755-3521.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Christie Harkins’ family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. The surviving loved ones of a wrongful death victim can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following an accident.
