Coronavirus Deaths at Illinois Nursing Homes Grows to Nearly 2,000, Making Up Almost Half of State Total
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recorded an additional 422 deaths related to outbreaks of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, bringing the tally of such deaths to nearly 2,000 since the pandemic started.
According to IDPH data released Friday, the number of weekly deaths in the state was lower for the first time since the agency started tracking cases in nursing homes. However, nursing facilities continue to account for a significant share of all COVID-19 deaths reported in Illinois.
When IDPH first released the figures on April 17, nursing home deaths made up 25 percent of the overall total. By last week, that figure had almost doubled to 48 percent. It now accounts for 49 percent of all deaths, as of May 15.
There are now 16 nursing with at least 20 coronavirus-related deaths. Facilities in metro Chicago continue to have the worst numbers with Meadowbrook Manor of Bolingbrook and Center Home for Hispanic Elderly each reporting 26 deaths. They are followed by Symphony of Joliet and Glenview Terrace, which report 25 deaths; and Elevate Care Chicago North, Woodbridge Nursing Pavilion, Villa at Windsor Park, and Manorcare Hinsdale, which recorded 24 fatalities as of last week.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which regulates nursing homes and care facilities in the US, requires healthcare providers to have an infection control and prevention plan in place in case of a disease outbreak. Nursing homes that don’t follow federal and state guidelines to protect residents and staff from COVID-19 may be held liable for any resulting deterioration in health or death.
