Illinois State Trooper Injured in Crash in Schuyler County

Police in Schuyler County, IL, shut down US 67 for several hours on Wednesday morning after an Illinois State Trooper was injured in a two-vehicle accident.

According to the Illinois State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. September 8 at the intersection of US 67 and Illinois Route 103. A white 2017 Chevrolet passenger vehicle was traveling north on US 67 when it turned into the path of a police squad car. The maneuver caused the police car to lose control, leave the roadway, and overturn in a ravine.

The ISP trooper in the vehicle, only identified as a 27-year-old man of Pittsfield, was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries. His current condition is unknown.

The driver of the Chevy, identified as Joel Garcia-Martinez of Beardstown, and his passenger, Salvador Ayala-Morales, reportedly refused treatment at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

An ISP reconstruction team was called to investigate the cause of the crash, and US 67 was blocked off for a few hours. Garcia-Martinez has not been cited, but citations are pending further investigation, sources indicate.

As the investigation continues, the people who were injured in the collision may be entitled to a personal injury claim. In order to be eligible for damages, an accident must have at least been partially caused by another party’s negligence and/or caused the victims to suffer serious physical injuries. With the help of an auto accident attorney, victims can seek compensation for current and future medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses.
