Integrity Healthcare of Smithton Cited for Failing to Quarantine Residents with COVID-19
A nursing home in Smithton has received the most serious citation available from the state public health department after it allegedly kept six residents who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the same living area as residents who tested negative, according to a state investigation.
According to sources, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) investigated Integrity Healthcare of Smithton for its compliance with regulations to prevent or control the spread of COVID-19 from September 16 to 29.
The investigation determined that on September 25, the facility failed to quarantine infected residents, putting residents who hadn’t contracted the virus in “immediate jeopardy” by increasing their risk for severe illness from the coronavirus and possible death.
Integrity Healthcare of Smithton is a 101-bed facility located at 107 South Lincoln, Smithton. It has an overall rating of one star (much below average) on Medicare.gov and has reportedly received 22 health citations since November 2019.
Nursing homes and long-term care facilities in Illinois are required to have an infection prevention and control plan ready in case of a disease outbreak. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nursing home residents are among the most vulnerable to the novel coronavirus due to their advanced age and increased likelihood of having existing health conditions that compromise their immune response. Facilities that don’t take precautions to protect residents and employees from the coronavirus may be held liable for any resulting health complications or deaths.
