Kevin Perez Killed, Four Others Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash in Vernon Hills, IL

Authorities have identified 21-year-old Kevin Perez of Kewanee, IL, as the man who was killed in a fatal collision along Interstate 94 on Sunday afternoon. Four others were reportedly injured.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. August 2 on I-94 near Vernon Hills. Perez was a passenger in a Toyota Camry driven by an unnamed 25-year-old man from Berkeley. The Camry was traveling west on I-94 at a “high rate of speed” when its driver allegedly lost control and struck a Honda CRV SUV that was traveling in the next lane. The impact caused the Camry to roll over several times before it finally stopped on the left shoulder, state police said.

Perez was reportedly ejected from the Camry and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Camry was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. A third occupant, only identified as a woman from Addison, was also rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, sources indicate.

Two of the Honda’s occupants, identified as a 50-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl from Chicago, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

It is unclear if any citations or charges will be issued in the case. State police are still investigating.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Kevin Perez’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Under Illinois law, the families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and more.
