Mahomet Doctor Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident in Champaign County
Police in Champaign County, IL, have identified 58-year-old Dr. William K. Schuh of Mahomet as the bicyclist who died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver last weekend.
According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred at 4:20 p.m. October 10 on the westbound lanes of US Route 150. Schuh and two other bicyclists were heading west along the right side of the highway when a semi-truck struck two of them.
Schuh suffered “great bodily harm” and was hospitalized in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13. An autopsy will not be performed, the coroner’s office confirmed.
The second bicyclist suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police. Their current condition is unknown.
The truck that struck the cyclists did not stop to administer aid and fled the scene. Police believe the vehicle was a “white and silver-colored” semi-truck with a trailer and are asking anyone with information to contact the Illinois State Police. The incident remains under investigation.
Many motorists believe bicycles don’t belong in public roadways, which is simply false; cyclists have the same right to use public roadways as motor vehicles. However, a collision between a motorist and a bicyclist often results in catastrophic injury because of how much larger, heavier, and faster motor vehicles are than bicycles. The risk of accidents is heightened in areas where bike lanes are not available or visibility is limited.
Since preliminary reports indicate the hit-and-run driver will face charges once they are identified, Dr. William K. Schuh’s surviving loved ones may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. The families of wrongful death victims can file a claim against the driver or the driver’s vehicle insurer to seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and pain and suffering following an accident.
