Man Dies after Vehicle Struck by Train in Montrose, IL

A Montrose man was reportedly killed after his vehicle was struck by a CSX freight train in Montrose last Sunday.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at approximately 9:47 a.m. December 6 at Maple Street crossing. A man driving a blue 2003 Ford Escape was reportedly struck by a westbound freight train while crossing the tracks. The impact pushed the SUV to the south side of the tracks, about 200 feet west of the crossing.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 63-year-old Pierre A. Menard, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only occupant in the vehicle, sources indicate. Toxicology samples have been taken and sent to a lab for analysis, according to the coroner’s office.

A preliminary report by the Illinois State Police (ISP), the coroner’s office, and the supervisor of CSX railroad reportedly found the crossing lights and the freight train’s horn were working at the time of the crash. However, there are no barrier arms (the type that lower to prevent cars from entering the railway when a train is coming) in the area where the collision occurred. The train’s conductor and engineer did not suffer any injuries. ISP and CSX railroad haven’t released any more details about the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Pending the outcome of the investigation into the Montrose crash, Pierre A. Menard’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. With the help of an Illinois train accident attorney, the families of train accident victims can sue the responsible train company or train company’s agent for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following an unexpected death.
