Man Killed, Four Others Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash on Eisenhower Expressway
Authorities in the Chicago area announced that a 19-year-old man was killed and four others seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on the Eisenhower Expressway on Monday, August 3.
According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 12:55 p.m. on Interstate 290 near Paulina Street on the Near West Side. Two vehicles, a 2007 white Infiniti and a 2015 blue Mitsubishi, were eastbound on I-290 when the Infiniti reportedly rear-ended the Mitsubishi for unknown reasons.
The impact caused the driver of the Infiniti to lose control of the vehicle and crash into a tree on an embankment, police said. Three occupants of that vehicle were purportedly injured. A 19-year-old man from Madison, Wisconsin, and another 19-year-old passenger from Chicago were transported to an area hospital for treatment, while another passenger, only identified as a 19-year-old man, died of multiple injuries from the crash, the source states. The results of an autopsy released Wednesday ruled his death an accident. His name has not yet been released.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, only identified as an 56-year-old woman from Hanover Park, and her 18-year-old female passenger were also taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, sources indicate.
It is unclear if any charges or citations will be issued in the case. The investigation is ongoing.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of the 19-year-old man who was killed may be entitled to a Chicago wrongful death lawsuit. Under Illinois law, the families of wrongful death victims can seek damages from those at fault for the person’s death. While no amount of money can bring back a lost loved one, a wrongful death claim can help families address the financial strains associated with an unexpected death.
The vehicle occupants who were injured in the collision may also be entitled to personal injury claims. They can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering following an accident.
