Markham Police Search for Hit-and-Run Driver Who Killed Motorcyclist Jiar Flowers-Milliner

Police in Markham, IL, have identified Jiar Flowers-Milliner as the motorcyclist who died on Saturday night after an apparent hit-and-run crash on Interstate 57.

According to the Illinois State Police, the hit-and-run crash occurred before 11 p.m. on June 13 in the northbound lanes of I-57, south of Crawford Avenue in Markham. For reasons that are unclear, Flower-Milliner, 23, lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown from his seat. He landed on the roadway, where the driver of an unknown vehicle struck him and fled the scene.

Flowers-Milliner was rushed to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition. He died of injuries he sustained in the crash at 4 p.m. on Saturday. An autopsy ruled his death an accident.

State police haven’t yet apprehended the hit-and-run driver. The investigation is ongoing.

Due to simple exposure, motorcyclists and their passengers often incur a greater risk of injury or death in an accident than the occupants of other vehicles. In 2015 alone, 88,000 motorcyclists were injured in auto accidents and approximately 5,000 lost their lives. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the number of motorcycle fatalities has more than doubled nationwide since 2010.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Jiar Flowers-Milliner’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. With the help of an attorney, the family of a wrongful death victim can legally seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and pain and suffering following an accident.
