Seth T. Guthrie of Peoria Identified as Motorcyclist Killed in Accident
Authorities in Peoria, IL, have identified 27-year-old Seth T. Guthrie as the motorcyclist who was killed in an accident on Sunday.
According to the Peoria Police Department, the accident occurred at approximately 9:38 p.m. July 5 in the 3300 block of North Sterling Avenue. Guthrie was going north on Sterling when he was struck by a vehicle that was pulling out of a driveway and onto the road.
Guthrie was pronounced dead at the scene. He reportedly suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries and likely died instantly, the coroner’s office told the press. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. There will be no autopsy, but toxicology testing is pending.
It is unclear if the driver who struck Guthrie will face any charges or citations. Peoria police said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Motorcyclists are not protected in the same way vehicle drivers and their passengers are, which is why they are often suffer serious injuries or death in accidents. Even though motorcycles represent just 3 percent of all registered vehicles in the nation, accidents involving motorcyclists account for around 14 percent of all traffic-related deaths every year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 80 percent of all motorcycle accidents result in injury or death. For comparison, that number is around 20 percent for car accidents.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, Seth T. Guthrie’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. With the help of an attorney, the family of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and more.
