An asbestos lawsuit that went to trial in New York City has resulted in a $190 million verdict against two boiler companies. Five employees of Burnham and Cleaver-Brooks, all of whom developed asbestos related cancers, sued their former employers in Manhattan Supreme Court. Only two of the men survived to hear the verdict; the three other tradesmen died from mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining caused by asbestos exposure.

The trial was eleven weeks long; it concluded on June 23rd, 2013, when the jury found the national companies acted with reckless disregard for human life. The plaintiffs worked as steamfitters, plumbers and construction workers at Burnham and Cleaver-Brooks, where they were never warned about the hazards of asbestos exposure. The award is the largest ever of its kind in New York City. One of the surviving workers, Paul Levy, fit pipes on aircraft carriers in the Brooklyn Navy Yard; he and wife Roslyn Levy were awarded a $60 million share of the verdict. Cesar Serna of Howard Beach, Queens also was given $60 million; the families of the three deceased plaintiffs were awarded between $20 and $30 million.
