Air Tools and Accessory Accidents

Air tools, otherwise known as pneumatic power tools, include nail guns, chippers, drills, hammers, and sanders. These tools are powered by an air compressor which transfers power to these tools and other machinery frequently used in the construction industry. When air tools and accessories are not operated or maintained properly, or they are defective in design or/or manufacturing, explosions can occur.

Causes of Air Tool and Accessory Injuries

Workers can be injured in a variety of ways in air tool and accessory accidents. These include:

  • Attachments flying off - Pneumatic tools have safety clips or retainers that prevent dies and tools from being accidentally expelled. When these clips or retainers are broken, missing, or not used, tool attachments can fly off and injure workers or bystanders.
  • Accidental discharge - Air tools that discharge or drive nails, staples, or fasteners at over 100 psig should be equipped with a safety device to prevent accidental discharge.
  • Hoses accidentally disconnected - Air tool hoses are high-pressure and a hose that becomes disconnected becomes a flogging risk to workers in the area.
  • Failed hoses - Safe operating pressures must not be exceeded when using air tools and accessories, hoses should be inspected for punctures, and hoses should never be used to pick up or lower a tool.
  • Accidental activation - Air tools should be disconnected from their hoses when not in use to prevent accidental activation.
  • Poor maintenance - Improperly maintained equipment is more likely to fail and cause injuries.
  • Lack of training - Workers should be properly trained and informed of the risks and dangers of using air tools and accessories.
  • Unfiltered air and excessive tank pressure - Both the buildup of pressure in the tank and the use of unfiltered air can have catastrophic results.
  • Defective products - If an air tool or accessory is defective in design or manufacture, the designer, manufacturer, and anyone else involved in the chain of distribution could be held liable for injuries their product caused.
Additionally, air tools can present general hazards such as:
  • Flying objects - Workers and bystanders should wear personal protective equipment when around any type of air tools as these types of tools present a flying object hazard.
  • Noise - Air tools can generate noise in excess of the permissible levels. Workers should wear hearing protection to prevent damage.
  • Ergonomics - Awkward postures, vibrations, and repeated exertion can cause injury to bone, muscle, and tendons.

Air tools and accessory accidents can result in serious injuries and fatalities. Survivors can face a number of issues including a permanent reduction in their quality of life, including extensive and ongoing medical treatment, disfigurement and disability, pain and suffering, and the inability to return to work.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
