Air turbulence is commonly caused by storms or heavy winds and is often a regular part of a commercial flight. It may last a few seconds or 10 minutes. It also may spark some mild discomfort or perhaps, genuine fear. Some air turbulence can be life-threatening and passengers may be at risk of an injury mid-flight. If you were in an accident due to airplane turbulence, contact us for a free consultation to see if you can be compensated for the damages that you have endured.

What kinds of accidents and injuries can occur?

Air turbulence can indirectly cause serious injuries to the passengers on the plane. This can occur from baggage stored in the overhead compartments falling due to extreme turbulence. The force of the turbulence on the heavy baggage may cause it to break out of the compartments and slide down into the aisles where it can strike someone on the head. This can cause a concussion or traumatic brain injury. Large, fully packed suitcases can be 50 pounds, which can be deadly to some people and certainly injurious to others.

Also, a food cart may fall and cause a domino effect of sorts that can injure passengers. A hot coffee carafe could fall on a person’s feet and cause burns, a bottle can hit someone’s face or head and cause bruising or cuts, and more.

Who is liable?

In these scenarios, the airline or airline employees may be found liable for the damages from an accident that occurred due to air turbulence. The airline is responsible for checking the weather and climate conditions prior to a flight to ensure that the entire flight path is safe for passengers. There should not be any excessive or dangerous turbulence during a flight that can put people in danger of injuries. The airline employees may be liable if they acted negligently by failing to take precautions that could prevent an injury.
