Several weeks after the tragic crash of Asiana Airlines flight 214 in San Francisco, eighty of its passengers have filed suits against Boeing. The law firm representing them has filed a “petition for discovery,” which will force Boeing to offer information on the design of the parts of the Boeing 777 aircraft. Flight 214 clipped a sea wall as it descended to the landing strip and crashed; three passengers died and more than 180 were injured.

Attorneys for the passengers have cited the 777’s auto-throttle, seat belts and evacuation slides as possible points of malfunction. In coming weeks, Asiana will be also be named in lawsuits. Many passengers on flight 214 suffered spinal, neck, and brain trauma. One of the passengers, a young woman named Zhang Yuan, suffered a broken leg and spinal injuries; she told reporters, “My husband, my daughter, other passengers and I would not have suffered such terrible injuries if the sliding ramps and the seat belts would not have trapped us in the burning wreckage.”

In coming weeks, the black boxes onboard flight 214 will be investigated, to better understand how and why the crash happened. In a plane crash, black boxes are sometimes the most concrete evidence available. Boeing, which has built more than 1100 triple 7 planes since 1994, released a statement to the families of the deceased and to the injured passengers, offering its condolences.
