Motorcycle accidents can result in a motorcycle-specific type of injury known as “biker’s arm”. A biker’s arm is when a motorcycle accident results in the motorcycle falling on the rider and causing nerve damage to the arm. The nerves in your arm control your arm’s movement in connection with your brain and the rest of your body.

Biker’s arm can occur when the motorcycle falls on your arm causing the damage, or if the arms take any of the force of a collision. The force can be powerful enough to ruin your nerves in the affected area.

Damage to the nerves in your arm would be a result of the impact of the motorcycle on your body and can have further complications beyond just the damage. If severe enough, the nerve damage could mean that your arms or portions of your arms could go paralyzed and lose motor function and feeling. Paralysis is the impairment or loss of muscle function of a portion of your body. It can affect your median nerve which is on the inner side of your arm, your radial nerve which is on the back and outside of the arm, and the ulnar nerve which is down the inside of the arm. Each nerve has a specialized function, such as bending or lifting things, that can be impaired and affect your everyday life if there were nerve damage to it. This can be devastating, especially to someone who has been used to riding a motorcycle to travel.

Of course, there are ways to avoid or lessen the severity of the biker’s arm. One way to avoid biker’s arm would be to wear thick and sturdy clothes. In addition, knowing that this condition is a risk, a motorcyclist could wear extra padding on their arms to act as another line of defense to any harsh force to the arms.
