Why Building Collapses Occur During Demolition and Construction

A building collapse can occur during demolition or construction when risk factors are not properly anticipated or eliminated by those working on the building. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has safety requirements for construction crews to ensure that they are properly protected during dangerous work, as well as providing protection to anyone not involved in the construction who could potentially be injured as a result of negligence.

Following a building collapse, OSHA implements their Incident Command System where a trained Structures Specialist will evaluate the conditions of the building and determine how future damage may be prevented. They will also determine if there was any wrongdoing on behalf of the firm or construction company in charge of overseeing the construction process.

How Building Collapse Injuries Occur

Aside from the initial collapse, there are numerous hazards that a construction worker or passerby can face. Following a building collapse, serious injuries can occur because of the following:

  • Exposure to harmful chemicals and radiological contamination
  • Exposure to electricity
  • Flooding
  • Lack of oxygen
  • Fires
  • Secondary collapse
  • Tight, confined spaces

These circumstances can lead to serious, often deadly injuries, including:

  • Crushing injuries
  • Amputation
  • Brain damage
  • Burns and abrasions
  • Poisoning
  • Lacerations
  • Asphyxia
  • Death

Individuals injured in a building collapse, or the families of those who are tragically killed, have a right to compensation for the injuries and damages that they have suffered. Multiple parties can be held accountable for failing to eliminate the risks associated with a construction project, demolition project, or other types of construction project. An experienced personal injury lawyer can review your case and determine who may be liable for the injuries that occurred and hold those people accountable, getting you the compensation you deserve.

We at Mike Agruss Law are proud to serve our fellow citizens in personal injury cases, especially when you or a loved one has been injured, and we are fully committed to protecting your rights and ensuring that the other party is held legally accountable when negligence occurs.
