While there is an increased risk with riding a motorcycle as opposed to a car, there are ways to make the situation safer for you. One rule that all motorcyclists should follow is wearing a helmet. Above all, this may be considered the most important rule. A helmet can protect you from a traumatic injury to the head, which generally has severe consequences.

Additionally, wearing the appropriate attire and gear for riding a motorcycle is important in the event that a collision occurs. This includes heavy clothing, such as a leather jacket, gloves, sturdy boots, and some type of facial protection, such as a face shield or goggles. By wearing protective attire, it will lessen the chance of more severe damage being inflicted after an accident.

As anyone on the road should, a motorcyclist should ensure that their motorcycle is up-to-date with any servicing that is required to keep it smoothly operating. This includes checking tires, lights, brakes, oil, mirrors, and more. Also, knowing that motorcycles are smaller and generally less visible than cars are on the road, it is important to ride with that in mind. This means that you can wear reflective clothing and make your presence on the road clear in order to ensure that others see you. It is worth mentioning that even though you may take precautions, drivers around you are still capable of inflicting damage on you and your motorcycle.
