Car insurance in Illinois is required by state law. Car insurance in Illinois provides protection against physical damage and bodily injury resulting from a motor vehicle accident. In order to comply with the law in Illinois, you must have vehicle liability insurance in the following minimum amounts:
$20,000 – injury or death of one person in an accident
$40,000 – injury or death of more than one person in an accident
$15,000 – damage to property of another person

Besides liability coverage, car insurance in Illinois also provides additional protections from uninsured and underinsured drivers. Uninsured and underinsured coverage, also known as UM/UIM, provides coverage if an at-fault party either does not have insurance (uninsured), or does not have enough insurance (underinsured). In other words, your own insurance company covers your claim. Illinois law requires that all auto insurance carriers offer UM/UIM motorist coverage. However, it does not require that individuals purchase that coverage.

Although not required in Illinois, you should buy the maximum UM/UIM coverage possible. This will protect you and your family if a driver causes more personal injuries than his or her insurance covers. This will also protect you and your family if, even worse, a driver with no insurance causes personal injuries to you or your family. Fortunately, maximizing your UM/UIM motorist coverage should be a minimal cost. This is good news, because there are more and more uninsured and underinsured drivers today due to the economic times. Car accidents can be devastating, especially if there is inadequate insurance or no insurance to cover your personal injuries. Therefore, maximize your UM/UIM motorist coverage today to protect you and your family tomorrow.
