Cruise control is a bit of a mixed blessing. It’s useful on long distance road trips and lengths of open, uncrowded highways. But cruise control increases the risk of serious car accidents and injuries, particularly in certain bad driving situations.

The main problem with cruise control is that takes the driver’s foot off the gas pedal and the brake; usually you keep your foot on the floor nearby. If you have to stop suddenly, to avoid a hazard on the road, it will take a few extra seconds to find the brake pedal, and this time makes a lot of difference in what happens next. Cruise control can also take your mind off the road (frequently, drivers keep one hand on the wheel while in cruise control, and that’s their only contact with the vehicle), it’s too easy to daydream, and disconnect from driving safely, which always requires concentration.

On curvy roads, especially unfamiliar curvy roads, it’s not a good idea to use cruise control. Stay completely in control of the vehicle on roads with sharp curves, intersections, stop lights, construction, and any other obstacles that require you to decrease speed and stop frequently. If you’re using cruise control at a high speed and come upon a curve, it’s easy to lose control of the car. Rear-end accidents are also a problem; accidents, merge lanes, exit congestion—all are possible highway hazards that are hard to anticipate, and harder to avoid when you’re on cruise control. Cruising also increases the risk of hydroplaning. In wet and rainy weather, driving at a constant speed makes hydroplaning (when the tires disconnect from the road, thanks to a sheet of water) more likely; and, cruise control offers the most constant speed possible, and also slows your reaction time.
