Dogs and children are a natural match. Not only do dogs provide a family with love and companionship for many years, but they also teach children responsibility and how to care for another living being. Unfortunately, not all dogs are well-behaved, well-trained, or safe and children, especially under the age of nine (9), are often the victims of dog bites or other animal attacks because of their lack of knowledge in how to behave around dogs and other animals and their loud and unpredictable behaviors that can put dogs and other animals on edge.

Dog bites and animal attacks can seriously injure and impact a child, including permanent scarring, long term emotional distress, and even fatal injuries.

Why Dog Bites/Animal Attacks Occur

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are over 4.5 million dog bite incidents every year, with more than half of those involving children. Children aged five (5) through nine (9) have the highest rate of dog bite incidents, however, all children are at risk for serious and deadly injuries following a dog bite or animal attack.

There are various theories on why dogs and animals attack children more often than adults, which include:

  • Lack of awareness-Children often don’t have the education on animal behavior or understand the warning signs a dog may give off.
  • Children are unpredictable-Children are often high-energy and move in fast, unpredictable ways that can make a dog or animal anxious. Anxious animals are more likely to bite.
  • Dominance issues-Some behavior professionals view dogs as pack animals with a strict hierarchy. Under this theory, dogs would see children as subordinates, thus more vulnerable to being bitten.

It is important to remember that any animal, dogs included, can bite, regardless of breed or size. This is why children should be supervised when they are around any animal and they should be taught from an early age to never approach a strange animal, especially when the animal is injured, sick, or acting strangely.

Dog Bite/Animal Attack Injuries

Because children are smaller than adults, they often suffer serious injuries due to dog bites and animal attacks, especially to their head and neck region. Animal bites can be severe, ripping the skin, tearing muscles and tendons, causing infections, scarring, complications, and they can even be fatal.

Dog bite and animal attack victims often require extensive medical treatment including long-term therapy and plastic surgery. Some victims will be left permanently disfigured and disabled and it is not uncommon for a victim to suffer psychological and emotional damage that may affect them for the rest of their lives.
