Firearm accidents and injuries are frequently tragic events. Each year, over 33,000 deaths occur due to firearm accidents, with a significant number of these deaths occurring in children under the age of 18. Many times, firearm accidents occur because guns are left loaded and within reach of a curious child. It only takes seconds for a child to pull the trigger, causing serious, and often deadly, injuries to themselves or others.

However, firearm injuries can also occur due to accidental discharge, defective guns, hunting accidents, and can even include other types of firearms such as BB guns, air rifles, and paintball guns as well.

Firearm Statistics

According to a Gallup poll released in 2019, 30% of U.S. adults say they own a firearm, while a larger percentage, 45% of U.S. adults report that they live in a gun-owning household. A large majority of these gun owners (72%) own a handgun or pistol, while 62% own a rifle and 54% own a shotgun.

A large majority (67%) of gun owners cite personal protection as the reason they own a firearm while only about 38% cite hunting as the main reason they keep firearms in their household.

A significant number of Americans (44%) say they know someone who has been injured or killed due to a firearm. 2017 saw the most firearm deaths in the U.S. in decades with a 19% increase since 2012 and the highest annual total since the mid 1990’s.

Why Firearm Accidents Occur

Children are curious by nature and often seek out firearms that are hidden in their parent’s home, often mistaking these dangerous weapons as toys. Older children and teenagers may enjoy the thrill and excitement of showing off and playing with firearms in front of their friends. And, sometimes guns discharge accidentally, or accidents occur when someone is unaware of how to properly handle a firearm.

To protect children from firearm injuries or death it is important that guns and ammunition are locked up securely in a gun safe or a trigger lock is used. Children should also be educated on how firearms are not toys and anytime a child must use some sort of firearm, they should be completely supervised by an experienced adult.

If your child was involved in a firearm accident, you may have a claim against the negligent party. Contact an experienced personal injury lawyer to determine who may be liable for your child’s injuries, damages, and/or wrongful death and what compensation you may be entitled to.
